Is my phone rooted? HELP

Hey guys, I'm new to the forums here, but not new to forums in general. My name is Justyn and I have a huge question about my phone.

I recently traded my phone with some guy on craigslist from my htc arrive to his 3d. When we traded I asked him if its rooted, he said "no" but he gave me a weird look. I noticed it had superuser installed already, does this mean it is rooted? I have been trying to root mine with Bootloader 1.5 and software 2.08.651.2 and android 2.3.4. I have tried the HTC unlocking method but it wouldnt pop up on phone to unlock it. I used the htcevohacks method. I found another guy that says he would root it for me for 25$ but some 3ds cant be rooted and if it came down to him not being able to still root it I would still have to pay him. I would rather keep trying on my own in that case. My main question is, how can I tell if the previous owner rooted the phone and just didnt want to tell me the truth? I would like to use my hotspot for free instead of paying sprint for a service I already pay for.

power the phone off wait 30 sec and then hold the vol button down while holding the power button down also until it boots into the bootloader . look up top to see if it says relocked or unlocked ,it will be highlighted in pink

If its not rooted use rEVOlutionary I believe it called. It will root you're HTC phone. Anyone can put super user on a Droid even if its not rooted.

do you have a custom recovery? you be able to grt to it thru the bootloader

What i would do is get black market alpha install it and from the black market getvan apk called menu unlock (needs root) if it asks for su pernissions you have root
