Is Root needed before Installing a Custom Recovery and CyanogenMod?

I'm new to this whole rooting/custom recovery/custom rom business. All I really know is that I'd like to get rid of Magazine UX, install a purer version of Android, and adjust the status bar of my Tab Pro 8.4. I've found a number of guides to rooting the Tab Pro, and there's the guide to installing a custom recovery and CyanogenMod from recovery at the Cyanogen Wiki. The latter I know I need to do to replace the Samsung UX - but do I need to root my tablet as well? And if so, is there a preferred method?

Technically No, you don't necessarily need root to flash a custom Rom. But you need an unlocked bootloader to flash a custom recovery. But they do go hand in hand. If you are going to install Cyanogenmod, then the Rom already comes with root access. The easiest way to do this is on their website with the "Cyanogenmod installer". You just follow the on screen step by step guide. Using this method will -Unlock the bootloader-install a custom recovery-and install cyanogenmod. Enjoy

No problem, let us know what you think of cyanogenmod.
