Is root the solution?

I hate looking at the facebook app and others that I will never use taking up otherwise useful internal memory. From what I can gather rooting the slider is my only option for uninstalling these apps. Is this correct? I see a lot of people posting that they want to go back to factory stock from their rooted device and it makes me wonder if the rooted phone is too unstable and unreliable.
