Is Samsung Pay using NFC or MST?

When using Samsung Pay how do I know if it used NFC or MST? Or does it send both signals always?

From my understanding it uses NFC unless it's a terminal that doesn't support it, then it uses MST.

I guess I’m wondering how does it know if the terminal supports NFC? When does it begin scanning for nfc? How does it know I have placed the phone to the terminal? That’s why I’m wondering if it doesn’t send both.

Phone chips can perform a million or more tasks per second. It wouldn't take long for the phone to determine which method to use.
