I feel like I could probably live with battery on the XL but the screen brightness is looking more an more like it could be a deal-breaker for me. Coming from an extremely bright Samsung I'm a little worried. People who own it, how bad is it... really?

It isn't the brightest like Samsung. But still one of the best looking screen and indoor brightness is obviously not a problem. Outdoor definitely it's not as bright as Samsung but bright enough you can still use the screen fine. At least personally it has never bothered me and I have all the latest phones.

Just like every other thing in life that is different, you get used to it..

Mine is perfectly fine. I have mine set at about 42% and it is clear and easy to read. I never run my phone at full brightness. It is brighter than my Pixel 2XL

Mine is fine. Yeah it’s not as bright as other devices in bright sunlight but I can still see it fine. People are acting like it’s completely unusable.

The thing that bothers me about all the reviews bashing the brightness is this....

Could it be brighter? Sure. I actually think it could also be dimmer at night in bed too. But....

90% of the time most people are using their device indoors in decent lighting. It doesn't really need to be brighter MOST of the time.

The trade off of the 90hz, the general crispness and accuracy is totally worth it being a little dimmer on mostly rare situations for most people.

Pixel 2 XL from what I remember had lower nits.. it was an excellent device for my viewing pleasure ... I think we all know Google keeps all their phones lower and it's no surprise..

The camera is a major factor in selecting a cell phone for me and it might shock you and Google but most of my photos are taken outside and I actually need more than 64Gb of storage. I haven't bought a Pixel 4 and I gave my Pixel 3 to a nephew.

Yesterday I went to an archeological site, outside at 6,000 feet in the tropics, and screen brightness matters. In the interest of full disclosure my biggest problem was forgetting to take my sunglasses off.
