Is the messaging app slow and choppy on your phone too?

As simple as the stock texting app is, it is the main source of perceived slowness and choppyness on the phone. I have to watch a few more videos of the International gs3 but I am really not happy with the visual presentation of it. There's almost no smoothness to be seen in the texting app on my Sprint version. A phone that can do what this phone can do shouldn't stutter when you send a text. Also, on occasion the screen flashes for a split second when typing, what's up with that? And why don't we get to see a contact picture in the texting app? Hand cent can't display contact pics anymore either, at least not the ones synced from Facebook. Ugh... We need to start a wishlist for Samsung and hope to get some updates.

The issue with the Facebook pics is the Facebook app, not the particular messenging app. I'm not sure if it has any effect on the lag you mention.

Would you happen to have power save on? I was having lag on the phone until I turned it off.

Never had these issues on my Sprint version... My messaging app is perfectly smooth, if a bit boring. As far as Handcent, I noticed that Facebook pictures only show up when you select the contact. Not really an issue for me (in fact, I really didn't notice until I read your post), but I think that's more a Handcent of Facebook issue rather than Samsung.

Try this setting change, you won't be disappointed. Also fixes the stutter of touchscreen ripple going into your homescreens.
1. Settings-> developer options-> and Window animation scale and Transition Animation scale -> change both of those to .5xThe phone now runs like the beast it was born to be.?

I had the exact same problem.

I solved by deleting all of the message threads and limiting the message history to 200. (I have previously disabled automatic deletion of sms history. I ended up amassing large number of sms history which was slowing down the app every time new sms is received/sent).

If you need to keep/save your SMS messages - grab SMS Backup+ (author = Jan Berkel) off the Play store.

Freebie app (donate-ware) - no ads

It'll backup to your gmail account, all sorted in individual folders by contact

Make sure to purge your messaging - especially if you get a lot of attachments - that can fill up and bog down the phone quite a bit!

This is my problem! I had no idea that amassing a long history of text could do this to the messaging app but apparently it does! Glad I found this!! Almost factory resetted everything, lol!

OMG! THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! I have been so frustrated with waiting and waiting on the messaging app to respond. It literally took forever. It has been like this for at least a year. Changing the animation scale fixed it! It now opens and closes like lightening! :)
