Is the S7 edge really so fragile?

I've been a bit torn between the regular S7 and the edge. I prefer the edge for screen size and battery and the edges makes the screen 'jump out' out more. I think the regular S7 will feel better in hand, less glare due to flat screen, a little cheaper, and apparently less fragile. Also no palm screen presses.

Now I know the edge will be more fragile due to more chance to of hit glass. But there seems to be lots of posts of random screen/back shattering with either no apparent impact/problem or tiny falls into soft surfaces.

So just a query to those who have lived with it a little more, is it really so fragile? Would I have to baby it? If so would the regular S7 suit me better?

I've had it with me since it was pre-released from T-Mobile and haven't had issues. I don't have a screen protector and I only have a TPU thin case on it. No scratches or cracks (but granted, I haven't dropped it). I do keep it in my pocket and it goes in and out quite a few times a day. The case helps keep some of your palm away from the edges, and it was a problem at least on the T-Mobile version (over-sensitive screen) but that has been addressed on the latest update. I've used it a few times without the case and while it feels weird, I didn't have issues with my palms making random inputs or slipping (they did on the S6 edge though, so that's weird).

I have just a thin case on mine. Dropped it once from about 3 1/2 feet up onto asphalt. No damage.

I dropped mine from the car door to the payment. I have a VRS case (excellent) and no screen protector. My phone did not even have a scratch on it and I dropped it face down.

That said, it is a device that by nature, you'll be more protective of.

I've dropped mine plus I just threw mine at my dog last night (nipped at a child in the face instinct reaction) survived minimal case

I think they are about the same as far as fragile goes. Perhaps the chance of a drop breaking the screen is higher considering there is more screen to land on, but they are just as fragile.

Don't drop your phone. If you think that you will, get a tough case.

It just depends. I dropped mine on tile from about 4 feet with no case and no screen protector. Only thing I got was a scratch on the side. I got lucky. I now have a case but it just depends how it lands or what impacts it.

Throwing the phone isn't the only thing I'd do to that dog.

I've never used a case on any of my phones I've had. Never dropped one... still haven't. But I did notice on the back of my S7 Edge a hair-line split running from top to bottom. Only can see it when the light is just right (black phone). But I really don't understand how it got there, I don't wear tight clothing that might stress it when I'm sitting, I don't put it in my back pocket, it hasn't fallen from any height. I'm not sure if it might have been there when I bought it and really didn't notice it till now (I've had it for about a month).

I am thinking the phone might be a bit more fragile than most phones. If you're worried about it breaking I would go with the S7 but if you do like the overall look and really I think he S7 Edge feels better in the hand than the S7... I'd go with the S7 Edge.

Well I think this will be the first phone I own that will get a case. And having just that little break in the rear panel is honestly driving me crazy. Could I have a bit of OCD.. lol

I would say the Edge is a little more fragile than the regular S7 due to the screen having that curve. If something were to catch that curve just right it could cause some issues or a break. I am usually pretty careful (or try to be but I am human)... I dropped my S7 Edge (first phone in like a year or more) but I have a Spigen Neo Hybrid case on it. It caught the corner, scuffed the case some, but phone is okay (phone did luckily land on its back).

I don't even own one but from what I have read in posts here and elsewhere the edge 7 may be the most fragile flagship smart phone ever built.

I'm still thinking weather to use it naked with just a skin on the back or fully protected with a tempered glass as well..

There are but not very good reviews. many are junk from china.

I dont think I will ever buy another edge phone and want to return mine, but dont think att will take it back. I dropped my s7 edge 3 1/2 foot. first drop and hit the edge of the screen just right. Samsung is sending it back now after another $275 put into it. I had an att case and screen protector on. I never had issues like that with other phones. I dropped my note 4 and others and never had a cracked screen.

I've had mine 3 weeks now, no issues but then again I have a caseology case on it. I would suggest if you're paying for a $700+ phone, spend a little extra for a solid case (no cheap knockoffs lol).

Well, I would say that almost be definition, the phone will be more fragile than others. Glass, even Gorilla Glass, is still glass. It's a material that doesn't take all that kindly to sudden impacts. And the Edge's design almost leads to having the glass, either front OR back, hit first on a drop. One thing that does kind of concern me a bit is that one of the things that makes Gorilla Glass as tough as that the process creates a permanent internal stress/compression. And I wonder if those sexy curves increase the chances of that stress causing a failure since the forces from a drop/hit will most likely flex the glass. Glass isn't exactly known for its springy nature.

But there's a simple solution: just use a case. Might not look quite as nice, but a Edge in a case is a lot better looking than one that's spidered up right good.

It's slightly more fragile that other phones due to the curved glass.

If you're really worried about it, I suggest getting a good case.
