Is there a 4gb limit on the S8

Hi all,

I am very close to changing over from my iPhone 7 Plus to a Galaxy S8 Plus, but just have a quick question regarding the 4gb limit that I hit a few years ago on Android.

I have a few movies that I was unable to transfer with Android File Transfer a few years ago as they were over 4gb.
A few people on the internet keep referring to the SD card being the problem, however this was not the problem I had as the phone did not have an SD card and the 4gb limit was with transferring to the phone itself.

So just wanted to know if there is a 4gb limit to the S8?

Welcome to the forum. I have tried to find something on this limit and cannot, but whether or not it being a limit of Android file transfer, why can't you transfer by using a cable and PC?

The only test i could do is try to transfer a folder with files that equalled more than 4Gb which went through fine on mine...... Never seen a 4Gb single file though.

I have a Mac so use Android File Transfer to sync a Mac with an Android (as Apple don't want an Android device just showing up, lol!)

However at the time that I was using it, Android File Transfer had a 4gb limit.

Has anyone else here with a Mac had any luck?

Yeah, the problem only came up with me when I tried to transfer a single file over 4gb... I have quite a lot of movies that are over 4gb, some even over 8-9gb.

You're welcome. I know nothing about Macs, but do they take microsd cards, or can you connect a reader? You could then use the SD card in the S8. I would think a class 10 would play the file okay.

An SD card and then reformatting it to something that will accept a file over 4gb might be the best option, however I would've had no issues with the storage space on the S8 seeing as it's 64gb and I'm doing fine with the iPhone at the moment with is 32gb, lol!

Now i know nothing about macs too but out of curiosity have you tried looking for drivers ? (no idea if macOS even takes drivers but i'm gonna go ahead and guess they do) as even my pc didn't recognize my s8+ until i had the correct drivers for the phone and then i was able to access all parts of it freely.

I say this mostly because lots of youtubers use macs to edit but they use android phones with no apparent issues so if that dosen't work or if i'm completely off the grid then i guess PJR had the only solution that i'm aware of :s.

The SD card was merely a method to get from the Mac to the S8. Once there you could transfer the file over to internal from the card. It would take a while, but it should work.

The 4 GB limit is due to the SD card being formatted as FAT32. If you reformat it as exFAT, you'll be good to go. Everything that is on it will be erased, so be sure to back it up. This affects all drive storage, so it's not just an Android + Mac problem. exFAT can be read and written to by all modern OS's, so it's def the way to go.

this is 100% correct.

this is a file size limitation of the FAT32 file system.

I assume that FAT32 is default? I haven't ever run into a problem transferring files but I wonder how my 128GB SD card is formatted? I seem to remember reading about NTFS a couple years ago but I can't remember if I reformatted my card.

FAT32 has a 4GB file limit, I'm not sure what the file system itself is on Android and Google isn't being helpful for a quick response. I do know it should support exFAT now which can have larger files on the SD Card.
