Is there a gallery? Or just Google Photos?

I'm coming from my Galaxy S5. Loved the gallery and different folders for each of my pictures. Does the Pixel have this? So far I'm just using the Google Photos and I'm not that crazy about it. Yet when I attach a picture in say Facebook Messenger it brings it up? From the camera roll? I'm feeling lost with this...haha....

Just Google Photos unless you get a third party app. The Photos app has all the different folders too, just hit the menu and "Device Folders" which will organize them by "Camera, WhatsApp Images, Messenger Images, Downloaded Images, Screenshots", etc. You can also individually turn on or turn off cloud back up for any device folder.

If you are in the camera app, in the bottom right if you click on the most recent image you too, it brings you to your camera roll, which is simply one of the device folders within google photos - same thing. It is not like Samsung where there are 2-3 apps for everything.

The problem with the google photos is that you can't give a name to individual folders. Say, you name a folder "family". Or am I missing something?

So to be correct you dont actually store any pictures/videos on the phone? Just in google photos correct? If this is true not having photos on the phone would free up lots of space.

Also one of the powerful features of photos is to basically do Google searches on my own photo library.

If I search for waterfalls, all my photos come up that have waterfalls in them. I can search for photos that have my son in them. I can specify my son and daughters and it'll find those photos, I can search for a location... this is all without me having to catalog and label anything (apart from putting names to people as that makes searching easier)

I don't believe this is quite right. I thought I saw mention of a Smart Storage feature on the Pixel, where you can allow the phone to delete photos more than 30 days old that have already been backed up to Google Photos. To me, that says that you could choose to not enable that feature and then local copies of photos would stay on your phone until you delete them.

I don't have a Pixel, but hopefully someone with firsthand knowledge can weigh in soon.

Personally with all the awesome features in Google photos, unlimited cloud storage for photos and videos etc. It's one of the best Google services to be released in quite some time. I back up my photos to Google photos, OneDrive and Prime photos but nothing beats Google photos in terms of speed, search and all the intelligent stuff it does.

Google photo is more powerful than a regular gallery app. With photo you can create album, name it whatever way you want. Share the album with certain people. One album I have is named after my new born daughter. It's shared among all her grandparents and my wife. Funny thing is I am the only Android user in the group. Every time I add a picture or video to the album, they get an notification about it. Other things you can do is maybe on a vacation trip, you can create an album with the group, and everyone can add their shares of picture or video to it.

I need to get my google photos under control then. Everything I get on my phone...pics/screenshots/downloads/etc gets backed up. So when I go into photos it's just sorted by date with lots of stupid junk I could care less about. Maybe this will organize me better.

You can turn off auto backup of specific folders like downloads and screenshots. And if there is a specific pic in one of those type of folders that you happen to want to backup you can click the little cloud button while viewing the photo and it will immediately backup that specific pic.

yup, I delete stupid pictures my friends and relatives send me everyday from text and whatsapp. You can also control what folders you want to include in your photo app. lets say one of your app comes with some random pictures like stickers that you don't want to include in your photo app, you can exclude the folder from it. If you really want to, you can also exclude pictures from whatsapp or text, just look for those folders to exclude.

By default, you will store photos on the phone. You have the option of removing photos from the phone at any time, and Photos will automatically make sure they are backed up prior to removing.

Smart storage (Settings > Storage > Manage storage) will remove backed up photos if you device gets near full. You can select the how old the photos removed need to be (30, 60, 90 days) for removal. You can also do this manually.

Where are they stored on the phone? Do I just access them from the camera roll?

Here's a question, do you get free lifetime storage for pics taken only from your pixel? Or for all the pics currently in your Google photos account?

Just pop open Photos and they are there.

From there you can use the menu on the bottom.

  • Assistant (some photos get the Google treatment, you will find them here), or you can make Albums, Collage, Animation, or Movie guided by the Photo App. Occaisionally, Google will do these automatically, and the cards will be under Assistant.
  • Photos -- This is where the picture you take are. You can select pictures with a long press and drag and easily add to albums from here. You can also search damn near anything (and use the search to create an album)
  • Albums -- group pictures by event, person, whatever you like. Your Albums are here. Albums are great for sharing, and if you allow, others can add photos to your album from their device -- this is great if you are at an event and want to curate all the pictures you and friends take.
Also, the menu will give you access to Device Folder, which is where downloads and other apps will store pictures (What's App, Screen shots etc).

If you see a cloud with a line through it, they are not backed up. Press it and it will know you want that folder backed up and start right away.

Anyway, I suggest spending some time with Photos. It is incredibly powerful and easy to use.

You get free unlimited lifetime storage for any phone, but you have to agree to let google compress your photos (has minimal actual effect). Videos are limited to 1080p. You can upload original quality from other phones too, but it just goes against your google drive storage quota. The pixel allows you to keep original quality in the cloud for free, even 4K video, which is the only distinction. Why this is important is other manufacturers charge $10/mo or more for this service.

with the automatic uploads, can you actually save a photo to the phone without it automatically being deleted? i would like to keep selected photos on my phone, but have others uploaded and off of the device. i am still debating the 32 vs 128 gb....

Google photos needs some work IMO. It works, but it's not really intuitive. I use Piktures as a general galley in conjunction with it
