Is there a way to get rid of new pop-up notifications?

I have a Galaxy S9 Plus on Verizon and use the Apex launcher. For the last week or two, when I get a text message or a new message in Facebook Messenger I don't just get a notification in the bar at the top, but an actual pop-up that comes up over the top of anything else and goes all the way across the top of the screen and about three quarters of an inch tall. It stays up for four or five seconds before going away. This is amazingly annoying and I can find no setting that seems to control this. It does not seem to be app specific as it comes up with texts, voice mail notifications, Facebook messenger message notifications and maybe others. Does anyone know how to get rid of these and have just the normal notifications?

You have to go into each app's notification settings and set the notification style to SOUND (not inside each app, this is in the phone's Notification settings). If you're seeing the pop-up, right now they're set to SOUND AND POP UP. Note that this might affect the ability of some apps (like messaging) to wake up the screen for notifications.
