Is there any way to boost the signal strength?

I am in a dead spot in my cube at work where texts won't send or receive and I can't access data and my calls mostly go to voicemail. I get one bar on the phone signal and at times I will see E and 4G popup but pretty much useless. I have tried the signal boost applications and they do nothing. I don't have access to connect to wifi. It get's real annoying leaving my desk to get text messages that were sent an hour ago.

Is there anything that will work to increase reception and boost the signal?

I have pretty much the same issue... It has gotten worse in the past few months. Now sometimes even once I am outside the phone won't reconnect until i put it in airplane mode and back out. GPS is bad too - it took 10 min before it was able to "locate" me and actually start giving me turn by turn directions the other week. I was hoping ICS would help improve this but no go. Thinking of taking it back to ATT and see if maybe its a hardware issue on my particular phone. fingers crossed maybe i will be able to get some sneaky upgrade to SIII instead of another SII

I get the same thing with data stopping. My Google voice text will queue up and even when it connects to data again it won't send. Same with email.

About the only way to do it is a repeater.

In my case, our support team was asking for a repeater for quite some time from my employer because our cell phones are company issued support phones. One day, we're all in a support meeting in a conference room near our desks that also lacks signal, and a red-faced manager walks in and says "there you guys are - there's a critical systems issue and we've been looking for you for a half hour!"

3 days later, the installer arrived to put our repeater in.

If it's a business-critical phone, it's in your employer's best interests to put in a cheap repeater. We lost a few tens of thousands of dollars in the delay. The repeater was something like five hundred bucks.

If it's not, ask your employer about adding one anyway, or allowing you to bring one in. Maybe they'll be accommodating.

I looked at a repeater but was hoping there was some way to do it cheap like lining my cube in aluminum foil or something.

I don't think the company will do anything. I have a corporate black berry that is also on AT&T but they only subscribe to EDGE and it appears to get calls and texts ok. MY Samsung goes from G to E to 4G to nothing and will get and send text intermittently.
