Is there any way to set custom notifications by event type?

Right now, it seems I can only set one custom notification for all event types (SMS, email, alerts, etc.). Is there any way for me to set up different ones for different events?

Go in the individual apps and change the notifications individually. You can set one for email, gmail, sms, google voice, etc. and then have a default notification (accessible via settings->sound) that will be for any other apps.
