Is there any way to use Android Auto without it taking complete control of my phone

I recently got a Samsung Galaxy S9+. I don't know if there was an AA update, if it's Oreo, or if it's something with the new phone, but now when I plug in and the AA splash screen comes on, there's a new message near the bottom that says "Swipe Up to Unlock" with a small arrow and I'm able to swipe up and fully access the phone, all functionality. I turned the screen off and when I hit the power button or the home button, the screen comes on with the swipe to unlock message. Can't say how or why it all works now, but this issue is resolved for me for now. (Pioneer AVH-4200NEX)

EDIT: Just saw that's it's in the latest update to AA. Now allowing phone unlocking.

The problem I'm having is that as soon as I hit the HOME button it goes back to AA (even if I've used the "Recent Apps" trick). I can't see a way of changing what launcher is used when hitting the HOME button ? Thanks !
