Is this a Bluetooth issue?

I'm having trouble finding a bluetooth headset that works well. I went to the sprint store yesterday and the guy (not helpful at all!) said ... no problem with the phone, of course it must be your headset. When I pushed back on this he said that well, there must be an update to Bluetooth on the phone.

I've tried a Jawbone JB2 plus which had horrible reception on both ends. Folks said they couldn't hear me and I sure couldn't hear them. And the daggone thing kept dropping it's connection. It'd be paired, I'd take one call and then then next call it wouldn't be there. And man, did it every hurt to wear!

So I just bought a BlueAnt Q2 and am now having other sorts of issues. The thing is very static'y if the phone is on the opposite side of the earpiece and if I put the phone in my pocket it announces that the phone is not connected. I can only walk about 2 feet away from the phone and it also drops.

Any ideas? Do you think it's the phone? I'm on the phone constantly and truly need a good headset. Any suggestions?

My father in law, mother in law, wife and myself all use the $59.99 Motorola headset pictured below that's available at Best Buy..its great :)

Keep in mind that Bluetooth is line of sight if you have the Bluetooth and phone on opposite sides of your body you will lose the connection. Same goes for your pocket so try to keep the 2 devices in line of sight. I use a Blue Ant T1 and I love it is the best Bluetooth I have ever owned.

Bluetooth is line of sight??? I'm sry but you are highly mistaken!!!! Infa-red remote controls are line of site, bluetooth uses radio frequencies to communicate!! there are like 70 some of these different radio channels each 1mHz apart. The more stuff between the devise and the bluetooth the harder it is for the signal to penetrate, But it is certainly not line of sight!!!

As for what your problem is with your bluetooth, i am honestly not sure :( My bluetooth for my EVO works fine, and i have had zero issues with it!! I use the Jawbone Icon as my bluetooth of choice and have had zero complaints!!! having owned nearly 30 different bluetooths from various manufacturs, it is by far and a way my favorite and the best i have ever used, with ZERO distortion at either end!!!

Do NOT get the Moto H700 (listed in an earlier response).

That was the headset that I had before. It is nearly 6 years old, BT 1.0, not A2DP enabled and I was always getting complaints about background noise. It was great when I first got it, but it is outdated now.

I literally just went through this, this week. I did a TON of research and narrowed it down to 3:

BlueAnt T1
Jawbone ICON
Moto H17txt

I went with the H17. It is 2.0, A2DP enabled (audio plays in your headset, like podcasts, streaming media etc), is a smaller profile (you look like less of a tool wearing it), has Rapidcharge (15 mins on charger adds 2.5 hrs talk time), doesn't hurt the ear (very light), reads text messages to you and everyone I have spoken to said it sounds like I am holding the phone to my face and not using a headset...this includes when driving in my car.

I am very pleased with it and recommend it. It is more expensive. If $99 is too much, the T1 is selling for $79 at BestBuy.

the only reason I recommended the H700 is because for $50.00 it's pretty damn good. I had a Plantronics Voyager Pro that was $100.00 and the stupid thing broke in like 2 months.

@ Trust - Sorry, my response was not meant as an attack on your recommendation, just that it was the headset I just came from and that it is BT 1.0 and not A2DP enabled, which is something I think must EVO owners want in their headset, due to the amount of media available to us.

Plus, I specifically changed it out because I got a lot of complaints from people who could not hear me when I was driving (where I use it the most).

It is a good price, but it the OP is looking to spend around $50, but less than $100, the T1 is a good way to go versus getting an older and more outdated headset like the H700. :)

That's fine I'm not taking it personally. It was just a good headset for its price that's all.

Line of sight?

It wouldn't work in your pocket if that were true. Bluetooth has a range of like... 35 feet. Seriously. I could actually leave my phone upstairs, use my bluetooth headset and fix lunch downstairs, and come back, without ever dropping the connection.

I second the recommendation on the Motorola h17txt. It's been good so far after 2 months of use. An added bonus was the fact that it connects to two phones at the same time. I just changed jobs and have a phone for work in addition to my evo.

I have a problem using bluetooth and wifi on at the same time. I have wireless headphones and it constantly drops in and out when I leave wifi on.
Not sure if it is related to your prooblem.

To answer your question it could be but in my first post I stated that Bluetooth is line of sight I didnt say only line of sight but I was misunderstood none the less. As stated below Bluetooth is a radio thats nice to know but what I was trying to say in my original post is that Bluetooth is best in line of sight. The radio signal is week and obstructions like the phone being in your pocket or on the opposet side of your body can cause static. Try keeping the Bluetooth and the Phone in line of sight and see if that helps. As suggested try turning off WIFI seams logical that this could weaken the radio signal as well although I have no proof of that. If none of this helps you might have a hardware problem try a different Bluetooth and then a different phone.

That is what I was trying to say thanks for correction me even though you are "highly mistaken!!!!" if you dont think I know the diffrence. Next time give me the benefit of a drought.

If you are making a sandwich and have to go to the bathroom if you leave your phone in the silver ware drawer and close the door to the bathroom while you are talking and going you will surely loose signal. Don't forget to wash your hands before returning to your phone you are making and sandwich aren't you

You do realize this has nothing to do with line of sight, right? It's exactly like Wi-Fi. The only difference is the protocol and the power. I really wasn't just making things up when I gave that example, I have done that before. That wouldn't be possible with a line-of-sight connection at all. It wouldn't magically go through the floorboards if it were line-of-sight. Don't be silly.

I misspoke thanks for correcting me you are the expert on Bluetooth. I do however think that for testing purposes the OP should try his Bluetooth in line of sight without obstructions from body walls or for that matter anything else just to see if this helps with his reception issues would that be okay with you?

Did you know:

Bluetooth uses a radio technology called frequency-hopping spread spectrum, which chops up the data being sent and transmits chunks of it on up to 79 bands (1 MHz each) in the range 2402-2480 MHz. This range is in the (ISM) 2.4 GHz short-range radio frequency band. Short-Range is the key words here.

I think that the frequency-hopping is what causes my Bluetooth device to get out of sequence with my EVO. I will for example try to make a call and my EVO will say that my Bluetooth is connected but I wont hear any sound as the call is made I have to turn off my Bluetooth then turn it back on again to correct this. I have a Bluetooth dongle on my Lap Top and this only happens when I am using my Bluetooth mouse at work I think it is interfering with my EVO to Blue Ant T1 connection. What do you think?

OP are you having any connection issues when you are experiencing the static?

Dave

The OP hasn't posted in this thread since it started, but I'm willing to bet it's some sort of Wi-Fi interference, as mentioned before. The relevant bluetooth devices here are Class 2, which has a range of 10 meters, more than enough to work in any point on your body.

I have been through 4 Motorolla S9 HD, (on my fourth pair) and having issues out the door with the current set. With the past 3 sets, they started off working fine. Within a couple of months I would start having problems pairing. Would have to do resets, unpair S9 HD etc, etc. Then music through the mp3 player would constantly skip (every other word). I would re-pair. finally I would get a constant beep as if the headset was either turning up or down the volume. I would then return the headset under manufacturer warranty. I have a Jabra BT 8040. It is capable of streaming music. I've had it since they came out years ago. To date, no problems streaming music. I occasionally have problems initiating calls with the Jabra, where the phone/Jabra headset seems to hang endlessly. Anyone with a suggestion.
Yes, once the MFG warranty expires, no more S9 HD for me. Its so irritating.

I have the S9-HDs too. In my experience with them, what you are describing is what happens when water (or perspiration) gets inside the S9s and shorts out some of the control circuitry. They are water-resistant, not waterproof and it has happened to me on more than one occasion. If under warranty, return to place of purchase for replacement. If not, thats up to you.

Sorry everyone ... I got wound up in a bunch of other stuff and forgot to come back here and thank everyone for their replies.

I'm actually now using a Motorola H15. It truly was the one that was NOT recommended by the folks at Best Buy and at Frys. It was cheap and at Costco, who has a tremendous return policy. With my experience with these things, that's a good idea ...

Anyway, it seems to be working the best so far. Or should I say, it WAS! The last few days, for some reason, it's connecting, but nothing is coming through the headset, so have had to resort to using the handset and recharge the thing (after about 15 minutes of use). It's annoying!! I haven't had time to deal with it and hope that whatever is causing this issue will work itself out. I'm having some other EVO issues at the moment, so this could all be related.

Thanks again for the replies. I think I'll probably stay with the Motorola line if I need to change -- maybe the H17!
