I was just wondering if this phone was gonna suck lol. I really want the phone for its gaming controls but i heard its inferior to other modern phones in almost every other way.

This phone looks awesome to me. If they came out on all the US carriers I think that people would be very excited for them. I would love to try one out. The controls look sick.

Yea, I think this phone is going to totally kick butt. All I know is it will be faster than my current phone, and that's all I ask for. Lol. Add dedicated hardware controls and it's winner winner chicken dinner for me.

This thing could be one of the best phones of the year, but it has to be updated in a decent time. It also has to have some pretty damn good games.

It isn't the a bleeding edge CPU or GPU, but put this in perspective. All those "bleeding edge" Android phones that come out have hardware that never gets utilized. The OS is way too fragmented to cater to all the various pieces of hardware out there so all those flashy specs become nothing more than moot points. The goal with the Xperia Play and PlayStation certified phones is to create a ecosystem were games are designed to run exactly the same across all certified phones. Sony is making developers follow by their rules and all games are required to run at 60fps. It's a huge step forward for Android gaming and exactly what this OS needs because right now it's a absolute nightmare for game developers. If the Xperia Play succeeds, this could be huge for Android and the future of game development. Sony knows gaming, Google does not so it's good to see a actual gaming company try to establish Google as a gaming platform rather than having to rely on Google for attracting developers.

There are about six or seven higher spec phones coming out on Verizon. BUT none of them have the controls.
If you want a higer speced phone and still have some controls, wait for the Droid 3 (slide out keyborad can be set up but no analog sticks), BUT if you just want a good phone with gaming controls and automatic access to the Playstation mobile store, this will be a fine choice.
I personally am waiting for the Bionic for access to the Nvidia store (since it has a Tegra 2), but this was one of the phones of I was deciding between.

Please also note that the PSP2 (AKA NGP) is coming out and will be a much better protable gaming system if your interested. You may want to look into a 3G version of that before you decide.

NGP isn't going to be a phone. It has 3G, but it isn't for making calls, it's only for data.

Specs are the same as the Thunderbolt, and that phone kicks butt!!
If the play had LTE, I would return my Thunderbolt and wait for it instead.

That's a very good point. I hear everyone, and I mean everyone badmouth the Play's specs... primarily the cpu/gpu, saying how its yesteryear, and outdated, yet these same people are going crazy over the TB. They really must have a sour taste in their mouth from previous Sony Ericsson phones to be such hypocrites.

Well sony didn't exactly handle the X10 well, i'm really on the fence here, I have an upgrade burning a hole in my pocket, and this is one of the phones I'm thinking about getting.

Motorola Atrix vs Xperia play. Thats my dilemma right now.

What would you guys say. I see it as Tegrazone vs Playstation thing.

The atrix has dualcore but the play WILL have a better development community (unlocked bootloader)

The controls are where it's at. What good are dual core tegra games if you can't properly hit the buttons?
every really good game i've played in my life did not rely on touchscreens or gyrometers.

This may be my next phone, depending on price/promotions/whatever.

Thing is, I hate virtual keyboards, and still rocking my d1. Its not worth upgrading to d2, and nothing else on vzw compares.

I want to wait for d3, but that is probably too far away. The gamepad might be worth sacrificing my physical keyboard. If I get the play, and find I must have my keyboard, I figure I'll still have a very versatile gaming device after I get the d3.

Though what would be most perfect is a bluetooth keyboard that can latch onto the play. Well, I suppose someone could make a gamepad do the same thing with a normal phone. I have one of those keyboard overlays for my d1 that works pretty well for emulators, but a real gamepad would still be ideal.

Vanilla, 4" screen, stereo speakers, FFC, some thickness to it... I am not even thinking about the gaming side of it and its looking d4mn good to me!

I got to test out the phone (dummy one) at a store, pretty good! The screen is noticeably longer than the x10i (my current phone), the sliding is smooth and the playstation buttons are just to die for. It's like a dream come true! (which was the exact same thought I had when the Walkman phone was first launched) :D
