Is this possible, VOIP on old Gingerbread phone

I grabbed my old Samsung Charge out of the drawer with the intention of downloading Google Hangouts and Dialer for use as a home phone. The problem I have is that the phone is running 2.3.6 Gingerbread and when trying to use the Play store I get the prompt that the browser is no longer supported. Then tried sideloading a couple different browsers and still ran into issues with the apps not being compatible with my phone.
So I'm looking for advice on how to make this work, if at all possible? I've never rooted a phone, not sure if that is an option but I would do that if necessary with some guidance.
