Is this the end for unlimited data? :-(

Just received a Twitter update from Verizon saying they have started their new shared plans.
Does this mean that unlimited data is a thing of the past for those of us that want to update our phones?

I'm assuming if we're still under contract for unlimited data for $30, we'll keep that until our current contracts end. What I'm curious about is, do they still offer individual data plans? The $30 for 2GB, and the rest? I'd hope so, as it seems like kind of a ripoff to suddenly only be able to get 2GB for $60 as "shared" data when there's only one smartphone on your family plan.

Speaking of which, having looked at an article with the pricing structure for this, it doesn't really make much sense to me. $50 for 1GB? Let's say you have a family plan with two smartphones; wouldn't it make more sense to just get both their own individual data plan, so they both get their own 2GB for a total of $60? Not to mention, 2GB isn't really a lot. I use just under that on a monthly basis, and if the other phones on my family plan were upgraded to smartphones, we'd definitely exceed that. They should've started it off at, like, 5GB for $50.

Think they're trying to force users to use wifi more since more and more smartphones are being sold.
It will definitely make users check their data usage.

I think they are trying to force people off of unlimited because LTE is so fast, people are using so much data (those with unlimited). I know when I has on Verizon I was using a lot more data on an LTE device than a 3G only device.

Lol, fifty for five would have been a slim possibility if they weren't offering it with (like we ing care) with unlimited text and minutes. It's a corporate power move to ensure revenue keeps on coming. Offer low minutes/text with higher caps and people might use these amazing phones being sold as intended, and might even side step the minutes and texting limits via apps. In sick if this , the government needs to step in and take cable companies out of broadband, and at least keep wireless companies honest. The idiots in charge don't know a damn thing as far as technology goes, and I'm sure they never question either groups cries of capacity issues (data caps on Comcast cover to mind). It's time to revisit anti trust and monopoly laws, if it's cheaper to have cable/phone/internet than simply cable and internet than something is up. About time the government and corporations start remembering who they are serving.

This sucks now its only sprint. I have t mobile with a 5gb throttle cap. Once sprint gets its lte running I can't see them keeping it either. There more money for them to make.

I'm on AT&T with the 3GB for $30 and I'll tell you I only use 1.1GB average per month because I use Wi-Fi at home and work. It's a faster, more steady data connection than HSPA+.

I really question if carriers will ever be able to get 4G data as fast and reliable as Wi-Fi.

If we all move to individual plans, we get dinged for data AND minutes/text. Shared plans are designed to move you a "pay for everything" plan.

I was looking at my usage the other day. In the last six months I have averaged about 170mb's a month. So I'm not worried about giving up my unlimited data. I will go down to the 3gb option.

I held onto it for as long as possible. When I went to my Skyrocket, they said I had to give it up and I went with the 3GB plan (ATT). I haven't come close to using that much. I don't stream music all day or download large files, but I am on WIFI when at home and use my phone for whatever I want. I can see where some people may have a problem but it has worked out fine for me.
