is this what they mean when they say open development?

I'm getting fed up with my Hero. I have tried to stay positive about this device, but I think that I am finally fed up. The typing experience on this device is shoddy at best. It lags horribly, It always suggests wrong words and it randomly capitalized letters. I have tried to use the compact keyboard, but it is still frustrating. The HTC email application has some issues with certain email. I cannot get videos to play over WiFi and the YouTube application will only play over WiFi. Of course there is the timestamp issue. Every time I called Sprint or HTC, I was told to wait for the update. Why do I have to wait for an update to get my phone to work the way it should? Shouldn't it work the day you buy it from the store? Of course, others say just root your phone and it will be fine. But why do I have to do that just to get it work? I can understand doing that id I wanted new features that I qwant supposed to have, but just to get the phone to work, I don't think so. Is this what open source means? That you have to fix the phone yourself to get it to work?

Amen... I went from a BB Tour to the Evo... I got to the point where I was so tired of the problems with the BB OS... waiting & waiting for updates... but after having the Super duper, amazing, can't wait one more day for it, Evo!!! for less than a month- I'm over it already... & if they don't get to fixing some things I have a feeling all the other people within their 30 days are going to jump to the iPhone 4... & I'm going back to BB- where at least I don't have to download an app to fix EVERYTHING!
