Is Verizon blocking Google Earth?

One of the reasons I originally posted this...

was because I too had downloaded "Earth" some weeks ago. Then, I'm alerted that an update was available, BUT the instructions indicated you should uninstall the previous version before installing the new one otherwise it would use up too much space. So, that's what I did. Then of course, when I tried to download the "new" version; nada.

As others have found, it simply can't be searched in the new market. It does show on AppBrain, but when you click the link, you get the message I described in the first post and no download. I also tried sending the link directly to the phone but, again no joy. One of the things that made me suspicious of Verizon was that ususally AppBrain will will indicate that a given App will not work on 2.1. In this case, AppBrain makes no such stipulation. Also, the google forums make no mention of any of this so it appears Google is unaware it won't work on 2.1.

Hopefully, 2.2 will come along soon and this won't be an issue. That said, my years of experience with with Verizon makes me leary of them in terms of this kind of crap. I wish there was some way to reinstall the version of earth I had since I feel I was tricked into uninstalling it.

Does the DI01/DJ05 version have anything to do with this?

I too had Google Earth since i got the phone, but i do not currently find it in the market.

I had another app that also "disappeared" after my update to DJ05,... CNET Audio, from MediaFly.. can't find it at all now that I've updated to DJ05.

I know the market defines applicable apps based upon OS Version.. but, does it go as deep as the smaller update versions within 2.1?

Update:.. As normal.. I didn't investigate CNET Audio until after submitting this... I don't see it at all on appbrain, so, I guess MediaFly/CNET has removed it from the market entirely... guess i'll take that up with them directly.

I wiped and flashed my phone a few times since i downloaded google earth, luckily i have made backups with titanium backup and Google earth remained on there so all i had to do was restore.

Hey guys, I know this thread is a few days old now but the missing google earth has something to do with the new market. Here is what I done, I went into settings, applications, market and cleared market data. Although this did indeed take me back to the old market, I did find and installed google earth and the new market was back right after I closed and reopened it. Hope this helps!

Edit: BTW, my fascinate is BONE stock DI01... >8)

Sorry, that doesn't work either...

I had already cleared the market cache and it did nothing. Also, clearing the cache should not take you back to a previous version of market or any app I would think.

I even entered the direct link in the browser: "m.google.com/earth" and it does NOTHING except give a message that it can't be found or some such.

This either has to do w/ the newer version of Earth not working with 2.1 or some silly verizon shenanigans.

Go to applications, market, uninstall update, exit, start market, it asks you to accept agreement, old market will load, search for google earth, install, enjoy! I will create a vid if you like? I just confirmed it again, it does work although you don't have to clear cache/data just uninstall the update.

that worked!!

Thanks! I had to do a system reset today and reload all my apps and ran into this issue too. I just finished reinstalling google earth.

Regards, Al

and I appreciate it! I knew merely clearing the cache would likely have no effect---mine was clear anyway. Of course, this also begs the question as to why the "new" market was effectively blocking Earth from any download be it market, AppBrain or even direct link. Was it a bug? Was it intentional? What else is being blocked?

Not trying to go all "black helicopter" but, something weird was going on and and I'm not sure it was an accident.

I don't know why the "New" market masks some of the previously accessible apps?
It's a mystery that I'm sure we will find out sooner than later.

BTW: My first response was done at work on my phone, and I couldn't look at the settings at the time is why I didn't mention to uninstall the market update (it had been a couple of weeks since I discovered it) and I had forgotten! :/ Sorry
