Issue a Google Home command from my Pixel

I always thought Google Assistant on the Pixel would be tied to Google Home. When I bring it up and say, "Okay Google, turn on the front lights" it only gives me a search result. What if I want to broadcast something, how would I do that from my phone in my car???

Is this the proper steps to take? Am I doing something wrong or have something set up wrong?

My next Google Home addition would be for the garage door opener, but don't want to spend money on it if I have to open the specific app to open my garage door when I'm a block away. I'd rather tap the assistant and issue the command...

Have you gone into the settings under the assistant and added all the devices you want to control under "Home Control" once you add everything it should work.
