Issue using earphones on new phone

I am new with the Samsung Galaxy S4. My phone seems to be recognizing the earphones because I get the icon at top when I plug them in. And when I receive a call I can hear the other person but they cannot hear me me. Do I need to switch some setting? I feel like it shouldn't be this complicated to get them to work.
