Issue with getting into recovery

Could use your help. Tried to boot into recovery, but i keep getting the dead android with a red exclamation. Did i forget to do something?

You have to use the volume button to scroll through the menu that says start at the top.

I never get a menu. I just get an android laying on its back with a red exclamation mark.

Sorry, I had a brain fart and missed that part of your first post. If you flash cwm from rom manager before accessing recovery can you get into it? Before I ran any custom roms I had to flash cwm every time to get into recovery, but I don't know if this is the same case.

Ok, I managed to get into recovery by having ROM Manager reflash it. But now when I try to make a nandroid backup I get an error message "Can't mount backup path".

I tried running a backup thru ROM Manager and I get "Waiting for SC Card to mount" and it never mounts so it can't do the backup. Using CWM 5.5.0.4. Do I need a different version? Or maybe this is an issue because I encrypted my phone? Any help would be appreciated.

I did follow that thread and its how I was able to get into recovery. Now my problem is that it will not allow me to do nandroid backups.
