Issue with Hangouts apps

Just switched from the Droid Maxx to the Nexus 6P and I'm loving it.

Started having issues with pictures sent to me via SMS. I'm using the Hangouts app and pictures never seen to download. I think this is only in group chats, but I'm not sure. I get a message that says "New SMS message to download."

I didn't have this issue using Hangouts on my old phone, so I'm guessing this is a settings issue. Any ideas?

Switch to Google Messenger for texting. Hangouts may be good for some things but texting is not one of them.

Switch to messenger like everyone else is saying. Hangouts is OK, but terrible at SMS/MMS.
