Issues with camera in natural light

Hey everyone. Wonder if everyone has this issue with their S4 - I get horrible picture quality in natural lighting. They turn out very washed out looking....The quality is perfect in most cases of artificial lighting. Granted I'm just using the auto mode on the camera, but the majority of the pictures I take are simply of my dogs and I don't want to sit there and play around with settings just for a quick shot. Do other people have these results too? I'm really disappointed, I switched over from an iPhone and as much as I'm liking my Galaxy more in every other area, the camera is a huuuuge part of my phone usage :(

Is this normal or do I have a bad phone? Anything I can do to improve quality?
Also, for what it's worth I took the plastic covering off of the camera lens, hoping that was maybe interfering with light somehow but nope...no difference at all.

Example of photos in natural lighting...poor quality, grainy:

Example of photo in artificial/indoor lighting...crisp, clear, great detail...

Oops...also, can a mod move this thread to just the base s4 forum...didn't realize I was posting in the active subthread...
