sorry in advance if this is posted, forum search came up with overwhelming and vague results. also suggestions were posts for other phones.
anyhoo.....my search button only does google search. i went to settings to include calendar, music, people etc, but i have to manually choose from drop-down menu on left of search bar to choose the search field. before froyo, pressing the search button pretty much searched everything by default. is there a setting where i can change this or am i stuck with it?

Go to Home > Menu > Settings > Search > Searchable items.

Select what content you want the search button to search.

did that, but i still have to choose the field in the drop down menu on the left and then it will search that category. for instance i have to choose "people" if i'm gonna type in a name and have it search my contacts. otherwise it will just do a google search. before i didn't have to specify where i wanted to search, it pretty much just searched ecerything including google. does that make any sense?

I know it's confusing the way they "improved" it. You don't need to pick people from the menu. The "g" search is everything. It will search everything you have checked in the settings. You have to remember that Google includes your phone since it is considered a part of the Google cloud. When you hit the "g" you'll notice it says "All" underneath it. This means all the categories you have selected.

i guess what i'm trying to say is that it works like crap. i type in the name of one of my contacts, and it comes up with a search on google. sometimes it comes up with a message if i have a convo with that person when i was texting. i have a bunch of songs by johnny cash on my phone. type in his name and it goes on the web to a google search for johnny cash. i have music double twist people every category checked. it just doesn't come up with the items on my phone that i'm searchinng for most of the time. its basically useless now unless i want to search something on the web. need a phone number....might as well open up people app and scroll through b/c search aint gonna come up with it.

on another note..when palm did an os update they usually followed up with another release that contained fixes and/or patches for known issues. does android generally do this as well?

treo 300>>treo 650>>treo 700p>>samsung instinct>>palm pre>>evo 4g

I can't verify this since I updated but I think the search results were sorted with the stuff on the phone first with 2.1. I totally agree that the changes didn't help it for the most part.

If you know you're going to search for a contact, open the people app and the hit the search button, this works in some other places as well. I know it's not as convenient.

Another alternative is to go into the settings again and under "Google search" uncheck the box for "Show web suggestions". This flips it back to more the way it was but it doesn't show web searches until you hit the Enter button on the keyboard.

I'm sure HTC changed it because people said they were getting too many results. Probably need to go on HTC's forum and post this problem.

I'm new to Android with this device so I can't speak to how often they are going to enhance things. Big bugs they seem to go after quickly.

I have to say I'm with thegov on this one. It only works if you intentionally narrow your search to a particular area. Otherwise it buries the results you may want under worthless "suggestions". It's stupid. I'm going to try removing web search and see how that goes.

in my experience it is that way initially. However it is seeming for me that overtime google is promoting the thing that I most often click on. Ie. Say my brothers name is James and I want to search for contact. I don't drag the arrow down. I just type in say "jame" and it slowly is narrowing the whole time. Over the last few days as I have been calling him more this way and emailing him as well the more that I choose him the higher he is appearing on my search bar. Same thing is going for apps for me as well.

So maybe it's learning my favs. Similar to how on Chrome i now pretty much only have to type 1 or 2 letters of a website before chrome knows which site i want. For the most part.

Yup, won't search people (or it's WAAAY down the list) unless I choose people explicitly. Like somebody said, getting rid of the google suggest fixes it.

disabling web search helps as far as contacts and apps are concerned, but does nothing for my music. i guess i can choose music if i want a song. at least its easier as far as calling someone is concerned....

Check out Power Search in the market. I think you'll find it better than either 2.1 or 2.2's version of search.

great topic. i didn't see the drop down list before i read it here. i have been so frustrated in that search button.
I removed the option for google web suggestions and everything is back to normal.
