It appears volume up key is being held down

On my Tab A 9.7, when I turn it on, if I press the volume up button once and release it, it appears that the volume up key is being held down continuously. Physically, the button appears to work fine, and pressing and releasing the button after the first time seems to have no effect. I can restart the tablet, and it works fine until I press the button a single time, and then it appears like the volume button is being held down again.

My son uses this tablet, and has been known to put it in his mouth, so there is a possibility that this may be caused by moisture.

Does anybody have any ideas on how to fix this?

This is an easy fix if nothing is broken. You need to remove the back cover and inspect the button if it's out of the locking tab on rear cover. If you don't know, look at the end of the volume down or power button how they're locked to the rear cover.
In this picture, both end of the volume button are locked in place.

If not locked, the button cannot go back after pressing on it.

Sometimes the button is dirty or sticky due to residues of liquid, it needs to take out and clean with alcohol.

If the little plastic on the rear cover is broken, you can try superglue to attach the end of the button to the rear cover.
Other solution if you don't know how to fix, buy another used rear cover, around under $15. Make sure it has both buttons, some sellers take out the buttons to sell as spared part.
