A few things to set right of the bat to get the most out of battery life.
1. Either set brightness to auto or set to middle.
2. Gps off unless you are using it. You can still do location based searches with it off so should be good. Gps really only good for maps and driving.
3. Bluetooth doesnt use much power bit you can turn it off unless you need it.
4. Wifi can stay on, in fact I never turn it off. However there is a setting in the advance wifi menu that sets it to turn off when the screen is off. I have this turned on except while plugged in.
There are few apps that are notorious battery hogs and these are stock apps. There are a few apps by google that have some settings that unless turned off which they are turned on by default seem to constantly pole for location. This will drain your battery quick.
A properly setup note 2 with the above settings out of the box should net you atleast 6 hours of screen on time and with quite a bit of power left over. I go to bed at night usually around 50% charge and 4+ hours screen on time for the day. Other than being rooted I do not use any external power savings software and I Despise the power saving mode.
In display settings you can adjust screen mode, I set mine to movie mode which seems to make colors more realistic which also reduces the brightness of some colors as well. It SEEMS to be better battery life but it is a minute difference and better on my eyes, also there is a setting at the very bottom for auto adjust screen tone. Your phone can analize the images on screen and adjust itself. This stays checked for me as well.
Have fun and by all means ask questions thats what we are here for! Your new phone is more advanced than most and there are thousands of youtube videos to help you out. My advice is look at the "dailynote2" videos first by lucidmike, his videos are very enlightening as to what your new phone is capable of.
