It is really really hard to brick this phone. I was really green when I first rooted. I recommend wugs root tool. Fairly easy and it takes you step by step

I wouldn't stress it too much.. The G.Nex is my first smartphone, I rooted and have flashed a few roms. It's really fun and pretty easy. I rooted by just watching the videos on GalaxyNexusRoot.com, but I heard Wugs tools is REALLY easy to use. I haven't really heard of anyone bricking their phone with this device, i'm sure it's happened, but it's probably few and far between.

Also, you might want to wait until they release the source for Jellybean, the roms may be a little more smoother.

Waiting is probably a good idea, but I cannot imagine AOSP JB running any smoother than Jelly Belly is running. JBelly is amazing

yeah Jelly Belly seems to be one of the best, especially if you are looking for something that's pretty close to AOSP.
with 2.6 and the official binaries it's really smooth

To the OP
Now's when it really starts. If you haven't taken the leap yet to the current stock of JB ROMs, i'd wait until the end of the week, at least.

Dev's are working on pushing out ROMs that are built right from the 4.1 AOSP source. These are going to be much more refined than the stuff we've seen up until now. No sense in going through the motions only to have new and better stuff come out around the corner.

With respect to how to go about this. Wugs is good, I use it, but for someone starting out it might be best to do your homework, read the number of sticky guides in this forum on how to go about doing it the "right" way.

There are plenty of tools out there that make working with custom ROMs much easier but there will be a point when you'll break something. Those tools may not work depending on the state of your phone. You'll feel a ton more confident that you can fix it when you know how to do things as close to the metal as possible. I'm in no way a purist that thinks those tools have no place, they do and I use many of them all the time. But from experience, having some knowledge of adb and how to push stuff to the phone will help you. Once you got that down, use the tools, they are easier.

This phone is almost always recoverable but depending on what you did to it sometimes it's not easy :)

Good luck!

Yeah it took me 4 hours to do it and had several pucker moments when I thought I did. (Important: follow every tiny detail I only missed one step and I had to re do it all) good news though its like my old Palm device you can always go back. Look for the official ROMs from Google and keep them ready just in case. It took me two or three times of going back to stock to get it right. Keep at it and you can do it.
