Best way I could describe it. On ICS the dialer would allow me to type a number and come back to it later, now when I multi-task the number disappears. I am running 4.1.2 on a HTC Desire 300, and the dialer is stock to the best of my knowledge.

If you leave the dialer screen by hitting the home button to perform some other function, it will still be there in the recent apps screen. If you leave the dialer by backing out you will lose the number.

I should have mentioned I've switched to a new phone with Jellybean. On the old phone (ICS) I never had recent apps, only a task manager. Now on Jellybean I have a home button that I double tap to bring up multitasking. I swipe up instead of to the side when closing apps, which leads me to believe this is different to the recent apps that has been mentioned. Also, it's more like an app grid than a preview, and long pressing yields no options.

Looks like this is a "feature" of the Sense 5 overlay. I'm wondering if I should move/repost this thread, or if anyone has had any luck witha workaround. Seeing as Sense/Blinkfeed can't be removed, I will more than likely just have to get a seperate dialer.
