Hi Gang,

I've been a long time fan of AndroidCentral.com (listening to podcasts and asking questions in the forums) and am finally joining the Droid X ranks coming from an ancient LG Dare. I was patient and got the phone + Media Dock + Car Mount + Otterbox Case + Prodicell Extended Battery for $100 (phone from Verizon, other materials from Amazon).

Any apps, tips, tricks, etc as I enter this crazy world of Android? Thanks!

there are tons of great apps. poke around on android central and there should be a list of "10 must have apps" or just google it and you'll find plenty. at a minimum i recommend:

*juice defender - to save battery
*quickpic - in lieu of the stock photo gallery
*google goggles
*angry birds
*flow free - in lieu of facebook
*astro file manager

there are many others but at least start with those, then you can begin rooting ;)

Awesome! Yeah, I've already started to get an Apps list together. I'm nervous about rooting.

The easiest way to root is just use the app Z4Root. No worries!!! :)

A lot of people (myself included) find that DolphinHD browser beats the stock browser hands down. It is much faster and has better features.

Two other "cant' do without" apps I like are WeatherBug and Touch Calendar.

Welcome to the Droid X world, and best of luck to you!

Calendar will be a big part because I'm a teacher and I have to keep track of dates. Keep 'em comin' guys!

If you're into listening to music on your phone, PowerAMP is a great paid music player. If you want nice free music apps go for Songbird or Zimly. Stock music player is not good.

A few apps I use a lot:
GoLauncher EX (replaces crappy stock launcher) - free
Evernote (for quick notes) - free
Google Listen (for podcasts) - free
Vignette (photo taker/editor) - paid
Taskos (to do list with a great widget) - free
Beautiful widgets - paid

I run stock Gingerbread and Launcher Pro Plus (LPP) as the home screen launcher. The X, even though one of the earliest Androids being launched last July, is still one of the best/finest/most capable. I spent some time using the stock home screens with GB and it is a VAST improvement over Froyo, but LPP has such GREAT widgets, particularly the calendar and people.

You will love the X and welcome to the AC forums. The search feature will provide you with answers to nearly every possible scenario.

I think your signature says it all :). WOW! I am struggling to be patient until Wednesday when my phone should arrive. I'm hoping that FedEx will leave the phone on the back porch rather than just leave me a note to go to the facility to pick it up. I'm busy all day Wednesday until about 6:30pm. Ahhhh! I guess I should go ahead and assume that Wednesday night I won't be doing anything but messing with this phone, ha!

What is the best Calendar App to go along with Google Calendar?

Welcome! I've had my trials and tribulations with the x, but I have to say, I still love it almost a year on from unboxing. I think you're gonna love it.
And plus 1 to juice defender, it really does help. When I accidentally leave it off, the difference is huge!
A moto-specific app that I can't live without is moto led, which utilitizes those nice bright dual led's for a flashlight mode that is super bright. Comes with a strobe function too, if you're into that sort of thing.
