I'm posting this in the HTC One forum, the Galaxy S4 forum, and the S3 forum.

My son just upgraded his HTC Evo 4G. Since I'm the phone geek (and he's on my business account), he asked me to go with him. We both took a close look at the One, the S4, and the S3. I made a point of comparing the "feel" of each of them. My take:

The htc is much lighter than I expected. The S4 packs an amazing amount of screen in a package the same size as the S3. But I think it looks funny with the various sensors above the screen squeezed so close to the top of the phone. Whatever, I don't really buy my phone for looks.

What about that "feel," you ask? Well, I was a bit surprised. To be perfectly honest, they all three feel......... like phones. The htc doesn't feel like a bank vault, the S3 doesn't feel like it's going to fall to pieces the first time I drop it on the floor. I have fairly small hands, but I could easily hold all of them. The button layout on the htc is a bit awkward, but nothing I wouldn't get used to. The biggest difference is that the S3 is too slippery, the S4 not quite as much. This is the one area I felt the htc superior, but not by a huge amount. Put a case on them, and the differences go away.

Indoors, all three screens are fine. All three of them are fast and smooth. I noticed no real lag on any of them, and since I'd likely put Nova launcher on the S4, (and probably the htc), any lag caused by Touchwiz would be a non-issue. I do think htc's changes to vanilla Android are a bit strange and counter-intuitive, while Samsung's tweaks are less strange but more complex. Most of the new features of the S4 I probably wouldn't use much, and I can't say there's any single feature of the One that floors me, either.

My son's decision? For his needs, neither of the new phones is worth the price premium over the S3. Especially not the S4, at $250 vs. $200 for the One and $99 for the S3. I think I'd reach the same conclusion if I were upgrading today. Until Google introduces a new version of Android with some truly significant new features, today's phones are more similar than they are different. The current generation of Android phones are a pretty mature product, and efforts to differentiate them amount to details around the edges, not fundamental distinctions.

My 2 cents worth.....

@myerweb, If it was BestBuy you went to, they do price match. I got the S3 nine days ago for 50$.

Unfortunately us Sprint business account holders have only the Sprint retail stores as an option. We don't get to enjoy upgrades at Best Buy or anywhere else for that matter.

Just another perk of being a Sprint business customer :-)

For me the screen on the S3 just isn't bright enough. I have used a friend's and even inside a room with lots of windows, the screen was difficult to read even with brightness all the way up. This killed my interest in the S3 immediately. Haven't had the chance to play with an S4 yet, but from what I have seen online it looks like it will be better, and of course the HTC One is great in that respect and still the one I am leaning towards. Only the storage issue is holding me back really at this point. Hoping that the larger version ends up on Sprint too at some point. I just don't want to be stuck with what..something like 25gb of usable storage with the 32gb model? That's simply not enough for me.

So you took your son car shopping and decided that the new ones weren't worth it and instead he'd be better off with something used? That's fine, but coming from the original EVO, and considering it's almost three years old, either the One or the S4 would have been leagues above its capability and worthy of the price. And it's not a premium price -- I'm pretty sure you paid the same amount for the EVO way back when. Also, why does Google and/or Android have to blow the doors off people's expectations with each release? It sounds like those Disney lovers who think the company should spend $1 billion a year on new rollercoasters at the parks. Android is head and shoulders above iOS and WP with regards to features, functionality, customization and choice of device. It's come a long way in three years.

I'm not knocking anyone's decision to hold off on getting a new device. If coming from the S3, I'll admit the S4 and One are not worth the upgrade. But from the EVO? I just came from the EVO, and $199 for the One was worth it. And would you like to know why? Because I'm worth it. I deserve better. Everyone does. It's nice to treat yourself every so often, and even nicer to treat your kids. Just a thought.

Sounds like you haven't seen Zoe's or the Highlight feature. :-) Those are worth the price of admission IMO.

Low light camera performance is amazing, and the microphones are every bit as impressive as HTC said they were.

The Zoe feature is cool, but to me it's just as usefull as some of the features that people call a gimmick on the S4. Honestly, the only "major" feature the One holds over the S4 is the sound of the speakers.

I'm psyched about the IR for TV control. Just waiting on VZW now....

I would never buy a last gen phone on contract. I could always find it at other places for a reasonable price.

I guess we have differing opinions. Which is cool.

My take:

The difference is 100.00 which, unless money is an issue, really shouldn't be a big deal. The S3 is still very capable TODAY. However, if your son is going to use the phone for the next few years, I would imagine the speed and updates will show itself in about 1 year. The S3 WILL start lagging behind..in apps...and definitely updates. I really didn't like the feel of the S4 when I held it. The One was the choice for me. However I would not have gone for an older phone simply because I am a "tech guy' and believe in forced obsolescence. I think the updates will die out in order to push the new phones. With Tegra 4 coming out later, even these phones will be ancient in about a year. That's just how fast the mobile landscape changes. I am an avid PC gamer and am typing from an Alienware M18X right now. The philosophy for all my tech is to buy the absolute best I can afford at the time of release to get the best return on my investment. If you take care of your stuff (which it sounds like you both do), then I would have gone with a new product. Just the fact your son ASKED you to go with him shows he is very rational. I would have gone with the S4 or One.

Fin.
