Just found a way to substantially increase smoothness

under Developer Options--> Limit Background Processes

I set mine to 4 and notice a difference

Yes that helps. I always set mine to 3.

No increase in battery life that i have seen.
And no disadvantages. It opens up more free RAM.

No advantage that as see other than makes the phone more laggy..Some background processes are meant to be in the background. Thats the way android works.

I havent seen no batt improvement but i do see more free RAM.
Keep in mind after a reboot the setting revert back to standard

freeing up ram still saves battery life

RAM is a huge killer of battery life due to the rapid memory
