Hey Guys and Gals

I just purchased a nexus 7 but been reading and reading about roms and Kernels etc. I am wondering if I do all this stuff to my nexus 7 should I back up the factory rom and kernel just in case? If so how would I do that?

Also on that topic what is the hottest rom and or kernel out there now?

And any other info I should know about the nexus 7 before I start digging into it.

Thanks boys and please be nice, I am new.

I personally don't believe backing up before doing this stuff is really necessary, Nexus devices have access to the stock images right from google so getting back to a completely stock device isn't that hard.
If you do want to back up you'd unlock (which will wipe the entire device), install a custom recovery and backup in there.

I'm a fan of Minco v6.1, w/ Franco's latest kernel. It's in beta right now but roll over to XDA and check out the thread. You can register for the beta on his website (MiNCO) and download it from there. It's very much like stock but just overall better and faster with a few mods. AKOP is a good choice if you want a less stock ROM with lots of options for customizations. Best bet is to try them all, ROM choices are a personal preference thing and as you use them you'll develop those preferences and be able to pick the best one for you.

You'll find the AC forums are always nice, at least for the most part. That's why they are awesome. It's a great place to learn the ropes without people making you feel like an idiot in the process. The mods and advisors are very helpful.

Take some time to go over the stickies at the top of the Nexus 7 hacking forum, they are a great resource to get you started but feel free to ask whatever questions you want. Someone will help you out.

Yea I have been. And now I am here,,,, asking,, What programs I would need.

The guides cover all that. You can get the sdk installed and do it manually or go with a toolkit like wugs if you wanna take the easy and less fun path.
The guides have the files and downloads you need to get started.
