hey guys, im new to this forum and new to nexus one as well. what i can say about the phone, its one hell of a machine! and im loving it so far.

anyways, i was reading up on some rooting stuf, i kinda know how to but one question pops up in my mind. my n1 is a factory unlocked GSM. was wondering if i still need to do the bootloader unlock thingy before rooting. maybe you guys can answer my question.

thanks guy and more power to android!

Yes you still need t unlock the bootloader to be able to flash a custom ROM on your device

ok thanks for the info. will try to unlock and root tonight. hope everything goes fine. is cyanogen mod the best rom atm?

yeah cyanogen is basically the go-to ROM. once you get confortable flashing ROMs you can maybe try others. but cyanogen has everything and is considered the best.

ok so ive successfully unlcoked bootloader, rooted and installed cyanogen. now i have a data plan with my nexus one and it previously said 3g on the status bar before the root etc. now it says H. is that normal and part of the cyanogen mod?

also i installed the google addon and was wondering what the radio was for. also noticed some items in my menu like devtools, spare parts. what are those 2 for?

sorry for the questions but pls bear with me. thank you again for all the help. :p

yes the "H" is normal. many people requested this, it just shows that you are connected to HSDPA. the stock ROM still used HSDPA, but it just said 3G instead. its just a graphical thing, no worries.

I installed the google add-on too, for all my google services. but i dont remember any new radio. my radio was still the same after i flashed cyanogen, it was 4.00.04 or whatever.

so the spare parts is included to help do lots of good things. for example, the FIRST thing you should do is install a black notification bar, so you dont get the screen burn in from the white stock color bar. spare parts allows you to change the colors of the clock time to white, black, or any color you want. same with other things like the pull down shade colors for all those components there. this helps because i immediately started trying out morphs, which are things like using desire icons for signal strength, wifi, pull down shade, etc. and the desire is black color, so you need to change all the text colors to white or somthing to see on black. there are some REALLY slick packages. i'm using black matte if you want it.

anyway, the superuser permissions thing is for when you install anything that needs root superuser access. for example if you install titanium backup, it will ask you for superuser access, just so it can access down at the root leve. no worries about it.

the terminal app included is just like if you were on your computer with usb connected, and you were giving fastboot commands on your computer to the phone. the terminal app can now do that right on the phone, so you wont need a computer.

and i havent played with devtools much yet, so not sure what they do. i think it will allow you to close certain things like the mp3 store that was impossible to get rid of. now you can.

you dont even have to worry about any of these "extras". they are just included for those who want to use them.

oh ok. well i dont know where the radio for is on my nexus one. so yeah. lol.

thanks for the reply btw, i have been fidling around with spare parts on my phone. i kinda get some of the things in there but i cant seem to find the black status bar. where can i find that on the spare parts menu? and sure i would like the black matte that your offering. though i dont know how to install but yeah sure. maybe you can teach me? ehehe.

ok so i tried to be a smart ass and went ahead and tried it myself. went here and followed a guide from forum xda.

did a nandroid backup, flashed zip file, rebooted and kept booting and booting etc. so i had a nervous break down and didnt know what to do.

so i went into recovery tried to do a nandrestore but error. so i reflashed the cyanogen mod zip and the google addon. works fine again. hope i didnt do anything wrong by reflashing.

i guess ill just wait for rogerpodacter or someones help on how to do that black status bar thingy. lol

Ok I didn't give you all the info. The black matte status bar is not in spare parts. It is a morph that I got over at xda forums. You install it with a free app called metamorph from the market. Once you do that you then can't see your clock cause the colors are the same so spare parts let's you change the clock color to white so you can see it.

The boot loop is scary but you didn't hurt anything. Now that you are rooted you can create nand backups so you can never break your phone as you can always restore the backup and bring the phone back to any instant in time, down to every detail. So I always create a nand backup right before I apply any changes or morphs just for safety.

I'll try to look for the link to the thread with the files you need.

oh ok. but when i tried restore/backup option when i booted in recovery, it gave me an error. so what i did was just reflash the cyanogen mod and google addon. hope i didnt mess up anything there or if the option i did was correct.

Well what error did you get? Were you trying to restore or backup? Cause I first had an error trying to restore when I first rooted. What error?

well before flashing the zip file for the black status bar, i did a nandroid back up. after flashing the file, i got the boot loop. booted in recovery, trying to restore, but it gave me an error. i forget what error. but i was trying to restore. have you got the file? :)

Oh you shouldn't use the flash from zip file. You should just use metamorph to apply the black status bar. Well you can flash from zip, but I think that is used only in certain situations, like on froyo we have to use that method because the source code isn't released yet. I just used meta morp. In fact you probably tried flashing a meta morph zip which gave you a boot loop error. That zip is NOT a flashable zip. No worries. :-)
