Just got my Nexus 4! Want to put my AT&T SIM in it. Do I need to make any changes to APN settings?

Just got my Nexus 4! Want to put my AT&T SIM in it. Do I need to make any changes to APN settings?

Is this article still valid. Do I need to go through all this to get proper data speeds on the ATT network? I will be putting my iPhone 5 SIM card in my Nexus 4.

Getting Proper HSPA+ Speeds on Nexus 4 (AT&T) | Ty Smith

AT&T has a significant problem handling unlocked google play devices that can cause your bandwidth to be capped around 2-3mbps. The problem is that the IMEI of the device isn?t automatically detected in the system as a phone that needs a ?Dataplan for 4G Smartphones? and instead is marked as ?Dataplan for Smartphones?.

You?ll need to call up AT&T support explain this problem to the rep. They will assign a dummy guid from a device that their system registers to your account as a workaround to assign the correct data plan.

After this, if you set your APN information correct, you can get much higher speeds. If you?re phone won?t work with these settings, it?s on the wrong data plan.

APN Settings:

Name: AT&T US HSPA+ (This doesn?t matter)
APN: pta

MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80

MNC: 410 (should be auto set to your network code)
Authentication type: Not set
APN type: default,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6

I didn't have to, just go to your nearest att store (not a franchise store) and have them give you a new Sim and update your imei so your data plan is accurate then enjoy the phone!!

Thats cool. For me I have all the correct things for my account. But the nexus 4 is known to have a bad default APN setting for att.

I've read somewhere that 4.2.2 fixed some of the APN problems older OS's were having with certain carriers and I can say from experience I've never once had a problem from the second I had AT&T put a new Sim card in the phone.

Are you still on 4.2.2 ?
I'm on 4.3, and was asked to update to 4.3 when I opened it and turned it right out of the box.

I'm on the latest build and set this up yesterday. I used the default "phone" APN and only changed the MMS port value to 80 (was blank), because I was having trouble sending/receiving MMS. It seems to work now. I previously used LTE-compatible devices, so I'm already provisioned for the right data plan.

Under APN TYPE: I don't have "admin, fota" I changed mine after talking to an AT&T tech who seemed like he knows his stuff. I was getting data rates of 4-5mb/s down and after I changed to the profile listed above minus the admin, fota, I went to 11-12mb/s I wish I knew what admin and fota designates. Everything identical as above just delete those two and make sure to hit "save" and reboot when finished. It worked great for my Nexus 4...

I added admin, fota is not needed. That is for over the air updates. You will never get those from AT&T for the N4. With my Phone apn, I have admin, default, and hipri. With my MMS apn, I have mms and supl.

I am prompted all the time to upgrade to 4.3 but I don't want to the phone is running perfectly in its current form and always worried something MIGHT go wrong with something and I'll hate it so I'm leaving it alone for now.

I just replaced my broken Nexus 4 two weeks ago when they went on sale. I used to see HSPA+ 15 under mobile network type. Now I only see HSPA+ with no numbers following. This might sound like a dumb question but am I getting the same speeds? Tried different APN settings but nothing worked.

This is just a visual change made with 4.3. You are still getting the same speeds. It used to display hspa:15 when active and hspa:10 when idle. Now it displays hspa+ when active and hspa when idle.
