Just got the 6P - need keyboard help

About 24 hours into life with my 6P and am pretty quickly getting it all set up the way I want. One thing driving me crazy is the keyboard, I'm hoping for some help here.

My last three phones (since I dumped the fruit) were Samsung phones, the last two being a Note-III and Note-V. I am missing two features of typing on the 6p that I'd like to get back.
1.) Numbers on the default screen! This is huge to me, and I cannot see why on a phone this size the googlites did not give me the option.
2.) There's no predictions (whatever they are called) that display possible matches for what I am typing. Particularly useful to me are things that I have typed before or use often being displayed.
3.) Smaller issue but the capslock method (tap and hold) is much slower than the double-tap used by Samsung.

I know there are downloadable keyboards, but I'd rather not try out a dozen of them just to find they solve one issue but not the other or that they are incompatible with the device.

Please suggest a tool or tell me how to adjust the existing keyboard.

re:

There might be dozens, but you only have to try one. SwiftKey.

It's amazing. And, does what you are looking for.

You could try SwiftKey. I don't use the numbers row but I activated it so you can see how it looks. Auto correction and prediction work great, specially if you swipe instead of type.

Re: Just got the 6P - need keyboard help

I use the Google keyboard. The numbers are displayed on the top line and you just need to long press the buttons. And it does have predictive text, which gets better as time goes by since it memorizes your typing habits.

Re: Just got the 6P - need keyboard help

The numbers... Google Keyboard doesn't do... BUT.... they do kind of give you a quick way to access the secondary keys (including the numbers). Click on the ?123 button on the bottom left and drag. Either that or long press the key for the number.

GK does do predictions, and if you double tap the 'shift' key, it does a caps lock.

I personally don't like Swiftkey. I've tried it several times, whenever they release a new update. I've found it buggy, laggy and for whatever reason, the prediction performance goes into the toilet after using it for several days, to the point where it is pretty much useless. I always come back to Google Keyboard.. it lacks the bells and whistles, but it always works, and it always works well.

Enabling swiftkey gives a message that everything I type (including passwords) is recorded by an unknown 3rd party....ummmmm...really?

It is possible to add numbers to google keyboard just the way OP wants.

go to google keyboard settings-->Appearance and layout-->Custom Input Style-->Add + --> select English as language and Layout as PC.

now go back to google keyboard settings-->Languages-->Disable System Language and below active Input enable "English US PC" layout.

Done

Did you sign into the app account? I use SwiftKey Beta and have never signed on. As a matter of fact, I don't have any of my Google accounts on +Google. If you are signed in7,sign out.

Swiftkey is good but you can do the same on google keyboard as well.

1. go to google keyboard settings-->Appearance and layout-->Custom Input Style-->Add + --> select English as language and Layout as PC.
now go back to google keyboard settings-->Languages-->Disable System Language and below active Input enable "English US PC" layout and disable English US.

2.go to google keyboard settings -->Text Correction--> "enable Show correction suggestion", "next word suggestion" and "personalized suggestion"

3.you can double tap the capslock icon and it will become capslock same way you use with samsung. the long press also works

I was signed in to the app store account, did not have an account with swiftkey. I was asked to authenticate (G+) when I eneabled it though, that is when I got the security warning.

The suggestions from Still1 (right above yours) worked, and the keyboard is smaller than swiftkey even with the numbers on so I uninstalled SK and repped.

True that.... and a new user may not be so used to the stock layout that it makes it hard to adjust... :) I've tried that, but I just didn't like the new layout.

There was a dev that fussed with the keyboard to get that number bar slapped on top, but they stopped dev on it a long time ago. The AOSP keyboard is essentially exactly the same thing, but without the hook into the google account. Maybe someone coded in a number row for that. I'll have to look.

I also find SwiftKey keyboard laggy - I prefer Google keyboard but you can't resize it, and on the big N6P 5.7" screen buttons are spaced so far apart that it becomes difficult to type for me. So I found NextApp Keyboard in the app store, it looks and works exactly as Google keyboard, but it's height can be adjusted, and numbers row can be enabled.

Try it out.
