Yea there's a thread covering this topic that you could go through in the DroidX forums. I also recommend the thread "Post Screenshots of your DroidX". Its good for getting ideas on how you might want to set up the docks layout of each screen.

Just spend some time getting use to the greatest phone for now. As time passes it will all sink in.

Smart Keyboard Pro
Launcher Pro with the launcher pro icon app
Handcent SMS
K9 Mail
and for games: Angry Birds

my recommendations:

1. try both Launcher Pro and ADW, changing only that application and nothing else when switching, to see if one runs better than the other for your setup. maybe do that last, after installing your other stuff, to detect problems.
2. Juicedefender is great for reducing battery consumption.
3. Dimming the screen down (turning off auto) helps a ton for battery as well.
4. Using Wifi in place of 3G also helps the battery.
5. If you're so inclined, the Apex ROM is killer and changes the character of the phone.
