Hi there! I'm on the leaked version of GB and would like some help getting to the official version that Verizon has released. I'm a very, very experienced BB user and have been on my DX for about 6 months now and am not familiar enough with dealing with the ROMs and such. I would just like some tips and a step by step on getting this done. I would like to retain my data as well but realize that since I'm not rooted, I may not be able to do this.

Any help you guys could offer would be awesome!

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

Joe

just curious why do you want to go to the official? What system and build are you on (setting - about phone)?

Well, I've just noticed some minor quirks, namely issues with my aftermarket keyboards that weren't present with Froyo, that have driven me nuts from day one. My hope would be that the issues may be resolved with the official release and if not, perhaps with future releases.

@boomerbsg - I'm not rooted. Never known the advantages of doing so, so I've stayed away from it. To be honest, I've just had a hard time adjusting to the Android platform and feeling comfortable with doing the advanced things like I did on my BB. If I found an easy, sure fire way to root, I would possibly do it.

Well you could use the link I posted, roll back to froyo, root with z4root (one click easy root) and install Apex 1.4.1 like me.. I'm in love with this set up. My DX is FAST with this rom. MIUI also flew waiting on it to mature a little and I'll try it again.

I'm old school BB too, so I know what you mean. There are things I miss about my BB, if RIM would bring something new and exciting out, I'd be the first to try it out; no matter how cool my Droid is.

Cheers

Thanks a lot mhans! I think you just gave me something to do this weekend!

Quick question, and I'm sorry for being annoying, but is there any way for me to back up my apps and all their settings prior to doing this? Just curious.

Also, you said that I would have to SBF if I was on the original leak. I'm on 4.5.588.MB810. Is that the original?

Thanks again for all of your help!

No Problem! Since you are on the .588 build you can go straight to official rooted GB by following the instructions in that video. You don't need to SBF back to Froyo.

I use Titanium Backup to backup all my apps and their data. That way I don't have to start all over with my Angry Birds levels :). It will backup all your apps to the SD card with their data. Then after you flash you can just download Titanium Backup again from the market and you can use it to restore all your apps and data. There is a free version and a paid version. I use the free version, but I will probably buy the paid version at some point. There are a lot of videos on Youtube showing how the app works if you just do a search. It makes it much easier to switch between roms and things like that.

Have fun!

Angry Birds is EXACTLY why I wanted to do that!!!! lol I was however under the impression that you have to be rooted to use Titanium Backup and save all of your app data.

Yes, you also have to be rooted to use Droid 2 bootstrap to flash. I am guessing you are rooted. If you don't know, find an app that requires root and see if it works. If you aren't rooted I think you can use gingerbreak to root, but you will want to make sure before you try it.

You will need Droid 2 bootstrap to upgrade using the instructions the video gives. You don't use stock recovery.

@mhans - Thanks man! I'm now rooted and though I haven't gotten to the .596, I will tonight possibly.

I'm looking around the site some and, aside from using Titanium Backup, which I've done (as well as bloat freezer), I'm struggling to figure out what to do now that I'm rooted. I know I can load custom roms and see that liberty rom is a good one to start with, but I'm having a hard time determining how/what to do.

Do I download the Droid 2 Recovery Bootstrap then for $3.00 from the market?

if that is what the video calls for yes, buy the DROID 2 one. And if you want to get into custom roms apex is a great one. Very stable and user friendly you can check it out in the roms/hacks section of the forum. It will probably get addicting BTW.

But for simplicity of use I would just root and run bloat freezer to speed things up and use adfree (no ads on phone). That will give you the least head aches and probably the most stable experience.

Yes you want to buy the Droid 2 Recovery Bootstrap. That's what I have always used to install leaks and roms and such.

Things I wanted root for was to freeze bloatware, install custom roms, and take screen shots. After just running stock rooted for a while, I eventually decided to install Apex 2.0. I have been running it for a few weeks and am really liking it.

Thanks a lot for all of the help guys, I really appreciate it! I installed ad-free now, really like the idea of that. Haven't done the bootstrap yet as I'm not sure I'm brave enough to start messing with the ROMs yet. At the very least though, I would maybe like to get to .596. Are there any advantages of doing so over being on .588?

Is there a guide somewhere on here that would show a step by step to loading a custom ROM such as APEX?

Thanks again! You guys really are the best!

Well, I manned up and went ahead and moved to .596. Pretty simple following that video. Is it that easy to do custom ROMs as well?

Yeah it is pretty much that easy to install a custom rom. The only difference is that when you install a rom you have to wipe your data so you need to back everything up first.

Here is a video from the same guy on how to install Apex 2.0 for gingerbread:
‪Apex 2.0.0 RC 2 for Gingerbread Droid X 2.3.3 4.5.596 .596‬‏ - YouTube

Here is one for Liberty for Gingerbread:
‪Liberty for Gingerbread V.8 Droid X 2.3.3 4.5.59 Install and Review‬‏ - YouTube

I like his videos because he always goes through the process of how to actually flash the ROM.

Last question is how difficult is it to go back to GB should I not like the ROM?

Thanks again!!
