Just ordered a refurbished Note and it shall replace my HTC One for a while. The first one and am really excited to get my hands on it! Any tips or tricks I should know about? I plan on updating to 4.1 via Kies.

I have had my Note since March of 2012. I have loved it very much. I have not run a stock ROM since maybe April 2012 so I never really messed with the Samsung stock apps much. I do use the S-Pen occasionally. I like knowing it's there if I want it. There are so many apps in the Play store that utilize the S-Pen, very cool feature. I am actually ready for an upgrade in a month so my Note will be my backup phone. I'll most likely get the Note 3 when it's available. Enjoy your new to you phone you won't be disappointed.

Also, if you root, install S-Pen board switcher. That's an awesome tool. It'll let you use Swiftkey when the S-Pen is docked to the phone and when you pull it out it'll switch to the Samsung Keyboard for handwriting detection!

So the Note 1 has the ability to detect if the S-Pen is in or out of the socket?

I mean the Note 1 may not have the best specs, but I need something to take notes with and the Note is perfect. So should I upgrade to JB then root? Or just stay on 2.3 then root from there? How does one go about rooting a Note? i717

See what's easier if the root method has changed. I'd probably just root it and throw a rom on rather than wait for the OTA then root then rom. You're just making an extra step. A quick Google search will show you how to do it.

Is this compatible with the Galaxy Note LTE (i717)? I only see it for the Note 2...

HTC One is a great phone - surprised you are going to a old Note - the Note 2 is way better phone to have chosen

Depends on how long "for a while " is.
OP is this a temporary replacement?
