Hey guys,
I just traded my Note 3, for the M8.
I had some questions which I hope you guys can answer, for one I was wondering does turning on location services cause a dramatic drain in battery? Also, same thing with the motion gestures, like double tapping on the screen to go to the home screen, do these motion gestures also cause battery drain? Cause on my Note 3, gestures, location services, etc drained the battery.

Also, having just picked up this phone, can you guys share with me some cool apps/personalizations for this phone, or any cool tips in general?

Thanks!!

I use location services and the motion gestures, my battery life with this phone has been great. I never owned a Note 3 so I can't compare.

Location is always going to drain battery, no matter what phone you are using. As for gestures, I don't think they drain battery. But I couldn't tell you, as I always leave them on.

Thanks for the reply, do you usually keep location services on? The only reason i want to keep it on is because it gives a bettter experience with google, but i dont want to sacrifice a good battery life for that.

Thanks for the reply! I will try it out now and see if i find any differences

I have pretty much everything turned on with my M8. Location Service (GPS), Bluetooth, NFC, WiFi, etc. And can go 12 hours with moderate to heavy use. I was never able to do that with other phones I have had. I was lucky to get 6 hours with light to moderate usage before I had to recharge. So I think you will be fine.

M8 battery is in the same ballpark as the Note 3, and with a little love it can almost touch a Flex. The thing to watch out for are gestures that work when the screen is off. Like Knockon on my Flex, makes the device great to work with when laying flat but adds a significant drain because capacitive touch is always powered and being scanned for input...

All the motion launch gestures are for when the screen is off. Also, I think the gestures on the m8 are more optimized and don't significantly affect battery life. I've been able to achieve over 7hrs screen on time with the gestures on. Haven't tested it without but I don't think it will be much different.

Please do test and thanks for the input. I know the 801 SoC helps make up a lot of ground in battery consumption. I really only notice the overall hit from Knockon if I try to go two or more days without charging. The htc may not use as much juice keeping the sensor alive also.

Yes, the 801 has really improved on battery consumption. I'll test it without the gestures tomorrow to get a full days worth and then report back here. Like I said though, I don't think it's going to be a noticeable difference. Well see, as I could be wrong
