I received a phone upgrade for Christmas this year and I couldn't be happier with my nexus 6p, especially after using it for two days now. With the initial hype wearing off, I have now settled down and realized I need to become accustomed with my phone and everything android offers. What would you guys at AC recommed to do with my new phone and OS? Any input is appreciated!

Get Nova Launcher, for starters. You can customize the heck out of the UI.

Ya, download all the top Launchers and see which one you like best. I like CM Launcher myself. I'd just start reading Android Central articles going back in time. Read this Forum. Go to the Play Store and see what apps are the most downloaded. Think about what apps you liked/used on your iPhone and install them on your 6P. YouTube is always a great resource. Look up videos about the 6P. Hope that helps.

Awesome tips. I have a question. Is it possible to completely restrict an app from using data at any time,? I like having the peace oof mind that the app I'm using isn't using up all my data when I'm not connected to WiFi

Have fun with live wallpapers! The ones I use don't affect battery life at all.

What I do overtime I get a new android (6 months, give or take). :)

Unbox and drool over it. LOL
Apple Super Shieldz screen protector.
Download, update all My Apps.
Set Nova Launcher (Prime) as my default and customize it.
Change most of the Icons with packs from Nox, Click UI, Velur, etc.
Add my custom alarm, ringtone and basically play with the settings.

Also, I drain the battery down to 5% before charging it full. I do this twice. Habit

Personally, I disagree with jumping into a Launcher. See how you like the stock experience for a few days. I used to use a 3rd party launcher but haven't on the 6p. I'm trying to limit the apps that alter base functions. Less overhead.

Good point. I haven't installed Nova Prime simply because I'm getting an error message when I try to restore from backup. So I'm finding that I'm using the 6p like my kids use the iPad. They just search for the app they're looking for. It would never occur to them to keep the app icon in one place and always go to that one folder or spot on a homescreen whenever they want to use it. I'm also noticing how easy it is to use the row of recently used apps at the top of the app drawer. I might just stick with the stock launcher after all.

I agree stick with stock experience for a few days at least. I personally love the stock Android experience. It's clean and simplem. The last thing ya wanna do is overwhelm yourself right away.

I agree with those who recommend that you install Nova Launcher, you can create a much better env than the stock UI and it's very easy to use. I also recommend ES File Explorer which not only gives you a great file browser but it also makes it easy to connect to shared folders on your LAN. I would also recommend Dropbox.

Since you new to Android, i will recommend a few apps to stay away from. Don't go for any so called memory boosters, ram cleaners, battery savers etc. You don't need them on Android despite them being available on the play Store. If you are cautious enough you won't need an anti-virus either. But thats your call. Stay away from any app developed by cheetah mobile also. When you are comfortable with your device and would like to automate a few tasks, then definitely check out Tasker.

Excellent advice.

The big one to avoid is app/task killers.

And no anti-virus. It shouldn't be necessary.

I also would stick with the default launcher for a while before trying something else. The default is how Google had intended.

Nope. The default is just Google's take on a launcher. Google intends for users to decide for themselves what they like best - whether it's Google Launcher, Nova, or any of the other launchers available. "Together, not the same".

For me, Google Launcher doesn't even support the two very basic things I want - icon packs and dynamic dates on the calendar. Nova has both, plus many additional features I don't want to do without.

First thing you should do - and I'm being completely serious here - is shoot some video on the 6P to see if it's acceptable to you. It was not acceptable for me and is the primary reason I sent it back. The lack of image stabilization makes for some poor video. If that's not important to you, you'll enjoy the 6P.

good advice. stay away from task killer and anti virus scanner.

I also recommend solid explorer file manager and its on sale for $0.99

if you want to mirror phone notifications on desktop use app called desktop notifications
