Just want to root to downclock

So I'm looking at rooting. I've read as much as I could on all the different ROMs out there and it's enough info to make one's head spin.

I'm currently running stock 2.2 (obviously, since I havent rooted yet).

With that said, I'm happy with sense and the speed of my phone. I don't really use any of the Sprint bloat but also don't care if it is there. I also don't consider my battery life to be terrible though with some of my daily usage I need to throw the phone on the charger during the day. My phone seems to run very stable as well.

So... I want to keep the stability I have now with all the core functions that I use (calls, txting, web browsing) but I'd like to get a little more battery life. So I've read about setcpu and its ability to downclock down when the screen is off. Not looking to overclock, I'm happy with the response of the phone. The FPS cap isn't something I'm overly concerned about either.

I've read about the sense roms bakedsnack, fresh, and so on. Should I really be looking at one of those are is there something closer to being strictly stock that I should use for my needs? I just want to be able to downclock for improved stanby time while keeping the stability of stock. I've read about the stock 2.2 with the leaked OTA kernel, should I consider just using that? I know the best answer is test out some ROMS and kernels and see my results but need some input.

Thoughts?

I think that you can underclock by using the app: SetCPU. There is a version of that app for root users, so I'm going to assume that having root is going to be useful or required. Also, HTC devices contain a setting called "perflock" (performance lock) that will need to be disabled before you can get your settings to "stick". It looks like SetCPU itself can try to disable perflock for you, but I'm unaware of how well this works.

Read up on SetCPU.

You can always root, and then put the rooted version of the stock 2.2 back on your phone. (XDA is down right now) This way you can use SetCPU to underclock to your heart's desire, but keep all of the stock goodness that you like.

You also have the option of putting a different kernal if you want, but of course don't have to if you don't want to. One that pairs well with the stock 2.2 rooted ROM is netarchy's stable 4.1.8.1.

Good luck..

AC-ROM. Looks like stock but has many tweaks to assist in battery life. Also the kernel that comes with is undervolted so that, in addition to our tweaks, in addition to you underclocking ... you'll get the battery life your looking for.

It's deodexed also so if you decide you wanna flash a theme you're good to go.

Well I ended up putting Bakedsnack 1.7 on my phone.

Followed the downgrade to 2.1 guide in the sticky here in the forum and then used simpleroot.

The whole process was extremely easy, making sure I followed each step carefully, and I've been reading for the past month.

I've got setcpu installed and will give this some time to see how things go.

Now that I've had firsthand experience installing a ROM and finding out how easy it can be, I may try a few others.

Congrats! Don't forget to update your Radio, WiMax, and PRI versions now! All are available below in my signature..

Yup, I did all that except that so far I've been unsuccessful getting my PRI updated to 1.4. Tried about 10 times with no luck. I'll have to attempt again later.

Oh and one other thing, with setcpu on bakedsnack, for max cpu freq the increments are strange. I can only go between 883mhz and 1.15 ghz. Is that normal?

Yeah the incrementing is pretty weird with the default kernel...but the battery life makes up for it. Keep in mind that if your scaling is set to conservative it won't hit that 1.15 unless it really needs it.
