Keep getting out of space warning

I can't figure out why I keep getting warnings that I have minimal space left. I can barely take a video or add another app. I've never had a phone where I used more than 40gb. Somehow as you can see in the pictures my main storage is almost full. But when I go into my storage and sort it, there's nothing really taking up much space.

What gives?

Check the caches for any social media or messaging apps like Telegram, Twitter, kik, etc. These can build up huge caches.

Install a terminal app (Terminal Emulator for Android will do) and enter the command

df

That will show you the free (Available) space on each partition. The only partition you can use is the emulated or sd card partition (the Pixel 2 calls it storage/emulated, so it's probably the same in the 3). If that partition is out of space, the phone is out of space. You may not have 40GB available. (The percentages you see are percentage og total storage - all partitions. The % used, at the top right is of emulated storage. Stupid, nasty, but that's what File Manager+ does.

Excellent, thank you for that tip. Would it be possible that I have malware eating up my system space? I have never used this much space before and I have the same amount of apps as I've always had.
