keeping apps on the 256gig sd card

You can't unless you root or hack Adoptable Storage in.
All apps will be installed to internal memory and can only be moved to the SD card manually after installation. Remember, ALL apps will have their main files in internal memory even after 'moving' to SD Card. It's up to each app dev to decide what, if anything, can be moved to external storage (save files, media, extra downloads, etc.). And also bear in mind that even after they've been moved to SD cards, most apps will revert to internal storage for updates since that's, by design, the only place an app can be updated in.

I wouldn't move any apps to sd card if you're planning on exchange your phone in tbe recall.... like the poster above said, the main files will still be in the phone

You can, however, use Smart Switch to back up the entire phone to either a computer or an SD Card so that when you get your replacement unit (I'm assuming most of us will be getting a Note 7 regardless) you can just load your back up and be on your way as if nothing happened to the old unit.

Don't mean to hijack this thread but does the same go for music? I haven't purchased an sd card yet but will soon...can I transfer all of my music over to the SD card once I get it or do I need to keep it on my internal phone storage?

Music can be stored entirely on the SD Card

SD Card, unless the manufacturer has implemented Adoptable Storage (which Samsung hasn't since it adds further complications to the end user, like not being able to use the SD card anywhere else or causing havoc should the card fail or be removed), is relegated mostly to media consumption, so movies, pictures, music, etc. are all possible to store on SD card.

HOWEVER, and this is from personal (painful) experience, I strongly advise against keeping your camera pictures/video on SD Card unless you've backed them up elsewhere (and I suggest using Google Photos...it's free!). SD cards are not reliable. That's the sad truth. They will fail eventually and you don't want to lose your vacation pictures because you were trying to save some internal space.

All my stuff is auto backed up so I use an SD card in order to keep my usable space open.

I also wouldn't recommend putting apps on the SD card. It's too much of a hassle, especially when you have 64gb of space.

Do you mean it backs up all apps and customizations including things like Nova Launcher? Kinda like a hard drive image?

Yup, Smart Switch can back up your entire device (apps, files, settings, the whole enchilada) and restore it to a replacement unit (or the same device in case of emergency). It's basically like copy/pasting the phone into another one. It can save the image to a PC or to an SD card, too.
