Keeping pics out of gallery

I have some pics I keep on my phone for work that show up in my stock gallery app with all the non-work pics. I had just accepted that was unavoidable until I downloaded CamScanner and found out it is storing JPEGs from the image captures that are not showing up in the stock gallery (I can access them via the file manager). I like that ability in the app, but now has me wondering if I can prevent other images from showing up in the gallery. Either single pics or entire folders. I thought the gallery loaded all pics on the device, but apparently not.

if you prefix the folder with a "." it will prevent the pics from showing up in the gallery

and if you give it a random seeming name anyone looking will likely assume its a system file of some sort.
