Keeping your number with Google Voice after cancelling line

Has anyone that has been using the Google Voice Integration cancelled their service with Sprint but kept their number with Google Voice? I am currently using the Integration and I believe I'm going to cancel that particular line on Sprint.

I plan to continue to use the number as it's my personal number (I also carry a work phone) and forward it to my work phone (what I've been doing for some time). To get back to only carrying one phone, I want to cancel service with Sprint, but I'm afraid they'll take my personal number.

So the question is, if my current number is a Google Voice/Sprint number, what will happen to the number when I cancel my service with Sprint.

Any ideas?

Is it your Google Voice number or Sprint number? If it's GV you will keep it, if it's Sprint I believe you can port the number out to GV but there is a fee.

You have to cancel integration.

Then you port number over to google voice for $20.

this will also cancel your contract with sprint.

good luck

@joeynumbers So even though the number currently shows up on Google voice as my number, it's not really a Google voice number at this time?

I will ask again. Is it your GV number or Sprint number? There is a difference. If it's your Sprint number you will have to port it out to GV and pay the fee. If it's your GV number cancel integration and that's it. Pretty simple.

From what I know, it's both. I previously had a different Google Voice number. When I enabled the integration, my Sprint number replaced my other Google Voice number (I know longer can use the old number). When I log into Google Voice, my sprint number is listed.

Since integration is currently enabled, are you thinking that Sprint will cancel my number in general and then I won't have a Google Voice number at all? I guess the only way to see what will happen is to first cancel integration.

Agreed, try to cancel integration and see what happens. If your number leaves GV port it back to GV, but you will have to pay a fee.

The number you use for GV was originally your Sprint number. When you integrated with GV, it became the number for that as well. You need to cancel the integration, and then port your number from Sprint to GV. It would the same situation if you ported your number from Sprint to VZW. You have to port the number out to keep it. Like an earlier post, I believe it is $20. Then that number is your Google Voice number, and not a "Sprint" number anymore.

i have a family plan with 2 lines and just completed the contract terms for both lines and am now free to jump ship, but I would like to get the Sprint Galaxy Nexus when it comes out. I know that there are great deals out there but only for new activations not renewals. I don't want to just cancel my service and re-signup cause I'll lose my phone number.

Should I somehow port it to Google Voice the day before getting a new phone, cancel my current plan, and re-enroll in a new plan the next day? Will that work? Do you have any other ideas that aren't costly?

When you go into the sprint store, or even a retailer, you should be able to get whatever deal is given to the new activation for a contract renewal.
