Got to agree, a custom launcher gives you tons of opportunities to change up the look of your phone and how things work. (like gestures for instance.)
Also, there are some awesome new apps out there. Zooper has been around a long time and is a great way to create your own widgets, or get them from other creators through the Play Store or on G+ where some awesome developers share their widgets.
Kustom Live Wall Paper (KLWP) is one of the best new things to come along in a long time. It allows you to create a "wallpaper" that has embedded in it widgets, icons, animations, that remain with the wallpaper in a "preset" when you save them and can be put back on your home screen in one fell swoop when you want to use them again. Awesome! And....some really nice developers are sharing their KLWP creations (presets) with others on G+ so you can use one that has already been done for you. Of course presets are also found on the Play Store - some free and some paid.
I have a great time "redesigning" my phone all the time! No boredom here!
(And some devs will even Hangouts message you and help when you don't know how to figure out something.)
