Keyboard doesn't reset?

When I open up the keyboard to text somebody, it seems like a 50/50 chance of the keyboard already being set to capital letters.

IE: I open up to text, keys all lower case.

I want them to reset to capitals every time. so I dont type like this.

Anybody know what to do?

2 questions:

In the settings for the keyboard, is auto-capitalization checked?

After you've started typing, does it always capitalize the first word after a period (I assume you made it not do that in your example for the sake of making your point).
