Keyboard pops up on Captivate when I press unrelated buttons!

I can't seem to find this issue addressed on the forums here or on the AT&T forums.

Just got a Captivate last night and still have a lot to learn, but something strange is happening and it doesn't make sense.

Many times when I press the three non-keyboard-related keys on the bottom of the phone (e.g., Home, Back, Menu), instead of the phone going to those places, the keyboard pops up.

I often have to repeatedly press the Home (or other keys) to get out of the keyboard and to where I really want to go.

Why does the phone do this?

You could try a reset - something could be wacked in the OS - if that fails exchange it. A friend had one that the search kept popping up - something defective with softkeys.

Also, did you install any 3rd party software that is keyboard related?

If something is really weird i start with a reset. It is no more work then returning the phone, and I can tell AT&T I already tried it when they suggest it.

Remember to back up anything that is not syncing if your reset or return.

I got a gel skin for my phone the other day, and that started happening to me...any of the bottom row of keys would bring up the SEARCH function--

A few bad words and a reboot or two later, I realized that the condom was touching the screen ever so slightly around the edges, which was making the phone confuse my keypresses...

A razor blade has temporarily solved my problem, until there is a larger choice of skins and faces out there for the Captivate...

Was the phone plugged in when it happened? Mine is fine 98% of the time but if I have it plugged in and the room is dark it will freak out sometimes and bounce between search and the home screen and I have to lock the screen and start over or pull the plug. Charging in a dark room is the only time it does it though.

UPDATE: Keyboard pops up on Captivate when I press unrelated buttons!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions:

1) CONDOM: I bought something similar as described in this forum, but didn't put it on my phone until tonight, so that wasn't causing the softkey issue;

2) KEYBOARD APPS: I had installed one of those Better Keyboard apps and a yellow theme, but hated it, and uninstalled it right away;

3) RESET: That will be an absolute last resort since the setup took days (especially setting up WiFi, registering with Google Market, and ongoing AT&T Address Book registration issues).

WHAT MIGHT BE A FIX: I experimented quite a bit this evening, and what appears to be an easy fix is for me to do a QUICK DOUBLE TAP on the Home or Back key and then the Quick Search crap doesn't pop up.
*but then that didn't hold either; very strange that it is VERY inconsistent.

Just a clarification, I am not talking about when the Quick Search keyboard will sometimes briefly appear and disappear; it was staring me right at the face, full on, and a ***** to get rid of!

One would think that a phone retailing for $500 wouldn't have these glitches. I emailed someone who works for The Office of the President at ATT and asked that someone troubleshoot this as I am curious to know what they say (short of reset; may as well just return it cuz I ain't resetting a phone a gazillion times to have the same thing happen again -- bought this phone to be productive, not waste more time) :)

I also was having a problem with that. I realized that I was pressing like it was a regular button.
Now I am so gentle it feels like I am just barely putting my finger on the screen or the home keys at the bottom of the phone.
I was having the biggest problem with the back button. I would press it and the key board would appear. Was all set to take the phone back. Yet my wife had no problem when she tried.
Now after using the swype key board, it has helped me realize how soft you can touch anything on the screen or home keys and it works. Plus I have large fingers so it is taking me some practice to work things.
Not saying that there is nothing wrong with your phone, but see if other people have the same problem when they try it.

I dont have the issue the OP and some others have but I have experienced when I have to sit the phone down to do something else that requires me to sit the phone down, when I set the phone down, the edge of my palm will hit the search button. It can be annoying but it is caused by not paying attention.

HTH,
Charlie

I sometimes have a problem similar to this. I will be browsing the web or on an app and be nowhere near the soft keys and all of a sudden the search will come up and interrupt whatever I am doing. I will feel the device vibrate as if I hit it but I am not. Most of the time it happens twice repeatedly. I know that I am not touching it because it has happened a few times when I am not holding or touching the phone.

I'm not quite sure what to attribute it to but it hasn't bothered me that much, just one or two touches to the back button and I'm back to where I was.

I'm having the same problem. If I press in between menu- home, home-back, or certain spots around the 3 leftmost buttons, it registers me pressing the search button on the right. It gets soooo annoying. I decided it must be my Zagg invisible shield, but I just pealed that off and took off my case just to find that it's still having the problem. Any other ideas anyone?
