So most kids don't get smart-phones until they are at least teens, but there is a burgeoning market for kids tablets now (check out one recent article about this: The Nine Hottest Android Tablets For Kids And Education [Pictures] - Forbes).

We've had such a tablet (Nabi, and now Nabi 2) for almost a year now and except for the Nabi Facebook page, there is no dedicated forum for discussing more general issues around kids and technology. I'm wondering if we might create something here that would serve that function? When I've searched the forums before, I will find posts here and there asking advice or info about specific devices, which are usually followed up by comments of those who don't have kids about why kids shouldn't need a "kidified" device, or have their own device period. I'm wondering if segregating such an area might prevent these random comments and help garner a real discussion for those who actually have kids who have these devices or for those considering buying them?

Sounds like a decent idea. I would think it would eliminate the types of comments you are talking about. Not sure how much traffic a forum like that would get though. :-\

I'd subscribe. I'm currently wondering if I could sufficiently sandbox a stock N7 for my 10 yo daughter. The size and weight and price are about right.

You can use something like Apex launcher to remove the dock, notification bar, and app drawer button. Sign into Google and turn on safe search then bookmark the websites that you want her to visit. Place the bookmarks widget on one screen and apps on the others.

You can also lock the apps you don't want her to open but I've not found it necessary with app drawer out of the way.

I use a separate Google account of course.

This setup has worked well for my 8 yr old.

I just bought the Nabi 2 for my granddaughter for her birthday, and I'd certainly subscribe to a specialized forum.
